Really appreciating all of the info on these threads. I bought a 2011 XJ with 40k miles and it’s been running great. Brought my car to the dealer yesterday due to coolant leak. I’ve been reading the through the ‘coolant leak’ threads all morning trying to find out if I’m getting hosed. A dealer here in Brooklyn who specializes in foreign cars wants to charge me $485 just to go in and find out where the leak is. I know jaguars to be complex vehicles, but this seemed high to me. Once the problem is identified, I’m then going to have to pay for the part too! Does this sound out of wack to anyone? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you

Welcome to the forums Bkjag,

That sounds like the kind of estimate someone who really doesn't want the job would give. A dealer looking for a new customer would have a look and give a quote for repairs. Jaguars have complex electronics for the powertrain but the cooling system is .... plumbing! At best a leak could be sourced from inside the engine compartment or from underneath simply by inspection - at worst it would take a pressure test.

It sounds like you've already found the X351 forum so there's no need for a link to it from me.

Please add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also use the US Northeast Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/us-northeast-35/ to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham

Hello,
I'm sorry your kitty has decided to leak.
I have never taken any of my cars to dealer for diagnosis/repair so I can't say if this price quote is out of line with Accepted Practice in your area or not. I can say, however, I also have Never paid Any repair shop so much money for Anything as I've usually been able to fix it myself or with the help of a mechanic friend (or husband in a bind).

For things I simply can't do for lack of tools or proper equipment, I have a well trusted independent shop do for me. They charge me $80/hour labor across the board. Of course this Is Northern California and not New York.

Someone will be along shortly to direct you to the correct section where you can find advice on this or any other Jaguar question.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Thank you, Graham. Had the year make and model in there, and just updated the mileage. Yes that forum is what lead me to join. I’ll keep everyone posted on how this turns out. I called another local place that works on jags and they said the same thing you did regarding a pressure test which would’ve been $75. Unfortunately, I just got off the phone with original shop and they already started taking my car apart. It looks like I’m going to learn an expensive lesson here. Thank again!

Did you tell them to determine the cause of the leak and contact you before proceeding with a repair? Members will be able to advise on parts cost(s) and time to fit which will put you in a better position to discuss the repair quote.

Worth a repost of the estimate in X351 forum for opinions from US members with the same model.

The parts required don't seem either unreasonable or unusual but I'd get a suprise if my dealer quoted that labour figure. Jaguar publish times for all repair work and NY labour rates could be much higher than I'm used to in England so I wouldn't want to say it's unreasonable.
