Welcome to the forum,

You should find some help in the S section.

Hi Bluenose. I'm also giving a '99 S-type 3.0 some TLC to work through misfires and transmission issues amongst others. Might be worth exchanging notes? Gr. Steve

Hey Jeff, on the main page simply scroll down and you'll see....
Jaguar models
in there you scroll down again and see S type section, click to go in there....

Once in there there are hundreds / thousands of useful posts.....there's a search feature you can use.

If you look though, you'll see S type FAQ........In here you'll find all the posts about the usual issues complete with detailed fixes or write ups c/w pics / vids etc

Good luck

Hi Bluenose. Welcome back!
Sounds like a basinful, where to start? I guess you're having the same cold weather as over here (I live in south Holland not far from Eindhoven).
I also had a misfire, it was most prevelant when asking the motor to pull below 3,000. Turned out to be two issues. An air intake leak at an elbow near the back of the intake manifold and a coil in the right bank - you need to pull the intake manifold to get at both of them... If your plugs have 60k on them it's worth pulling those in the left bank to inspect for eroded center electrode. The electrode gap is large compared with mortal cars...
The transmission we tackled in two stages: first I surfed the net for similar symptoms and found several posts referring to a broken 3-4 pre-select spring. I was introduced to a transmission specialist and his first opinion was out with the box and do a full recondition for about 1500 quid, but he was willing to try pulling the valve body and fit a spring kit. True to the posts the spring came out in 4 pieces. That fixed the missing 4th and 5th gears. It took the car over the border onto the autobahn to stretch its legs and came back with a new issue: no 1st gear and strange shift schedule amongst 4th, 5th and the TCC. Again the guy was convinced to try to replace the solenoid block instead of pulling the whole box. Now have a fully functional box. The spring pack was 10 pounds and the solenoid block 250; new filter and gasket plus fresh Mercon V and we both learned a lot about the transmission...
Demisting, do you get a good supply of warm air to the interior? If not you may need to replace the heater valve block. It's level with the bottom of the radiator on the right-hand side and has five hoses and two valves. It's common for these to get trash in them and stop working. Check for hot pipes leading back along the chassis rails towards the cabin with heater on full and engine up to temperature. Also check for power on the connectors to rule out fuse or heater logic issues.
The management system is so reliant on having stable and sufficient voltage that a good battery is not a luxury. Heavy circuits like rear window elements might cook their fuse if the voltage is low.
The screenwash pump may be dead, but worth checking the fuse and relay first, cleaning the connectors may help. I wouldn't recommend using WD-40, though. This leaves a protective, insulating film on the connector contacts.
Hope this gives you some thoughts on whether to soldier on with your car...
