Default New Member in Idaho, USA with a 1998 XK8 Coupe

Hello,

I've recently acquired a 1998 XK8 Topaz Coupe with an "Oatmeal" interior and am definitely in the learning stages right now. (I Suspect I'll always will be learning; I enjoy that quite a lot.) When the XK8s first came out in the mid-1990s I thought they looked very much like the E-Types I recalled from the 1960s. (My cousin had a 1968 E-Type convertible, and I always thought that was one of the best-looking sports cars I'd ever seen. It was also a lot of fun to drive!)

I suppose one of my first projects on the XK8 will be to define the state of the timing-chain tensioners (and likely update them, if still plastic). So, advice/comments on that would certainly be appreciated.

Glad to be here among you,
Mark

Ah, but having been fortunate to have owned both (near 40 yrs on the E-Type) and an XJ-S in between, I believe the X100 shows all the refinements of a further 40 years of evolution and development over the E. The Series 1 E-Type was exhilarating but savage, even in our 4.2L variant. You just knew it was a 150mph machine, even when parked in the driveway! It was mind-numbing under harsh acceleration as the road disappeared under that long bonnet. But it was a pain to get in and out and not a comfortable long distance Grand Tourer like your car.

That's a long-winded welcome, but you have taken on "the pick of the crop".
Cheers and best wishes Mark,

Hello and thanks for the welcome! I agree, my cousin's '68 E-Type was harsh and such, but it did move out! It had a very brash sports-car feel to it. On the other hand, the XK8 is definitely a Grand Touring machine. It's very smooth and I'm surprised when I look down at the speedometer. I will definitely be using the cruise control on road trips to keep the speed within limits. I think your comparison is spot on...savage vs refined!

Greetings from Idaho,
Mark
