I usually drive it non-stop - i.e. just fuel stops. Its usually 565 miles and all but 22 are Interstate at 78 mph. Just drove down to FL for the first time in the XK8. mpg was 28.8 and actually improved when I upped the cruise control from 73 to 78 mph. Could this be the variable valve timing kicking in or being at a better part of the torque curve? Would be interested to see the torque curve for the 4.2L engine. First car I have had that does the trip with only one stop for fuel.
I can't find the torque curve for the 4.2L, only the figure for peak torque of 303 lb.ft @ 4,100 RPM quoted in a number of marque books.
Your 28.8 mpg (equivalent to 23.96 for our Imperial gallon) is a good return and better than the 22.6 (equivalent to 27.1 mpg per US gallon) I get on a long trip.

You may have got the conversion factor reversed. A UK gal is 20% more than a US gal., so you get more mpg with UK gals so 28.8 mpg (US) equates to 34.56 mpg (UK) which is quite amazing for 4.2L. Much of this is due to being able to keep at a constant high speed for hours at a time, and just slowing down for clowns who clog up the middle lane at 70 mph. Any idea why Jag chose to have no indicator light to show cruise control is engaged? Over the years, I've noticed differing philosophies regarding cruise control indicator lights. Chrysler and Ford like to have the light show cruise is armed or operating. GM have the light come on only when cruise control is operating, so having no light at all on the Jag is unusual.
