Default New Member - Need help deciding between V8 S & R

Hi all! Sorry for the long post, I'm new here and I need help deciding between a V8 S & an R!

Background: I currently daily drive a 2014 Audi S4 6MT & also have a 2001 Porsche Boxster S 6MT. I have decided to sell both and get an F-Type.

I am currently comparing 2 options:

1) I'm looking at a few 2014 F-Type V8 S's, but they are all several states away, making inspections, test driving, delivery, etc. difficult.

2) I'm also looking at a 2016 F-Type R which is much closer and would be more convenient to get, but is ~$12k more.

My thoughts: I guess my concern is driving a RWD convertible year-round. The Boxster only gets out on nice summer days, and my S4 has never had an issue with the snow. If I got the V8 S, would winters be a problem? I live and work in Kentucky/West Virginia so we don't get crazy amounts of snow but the roads aren't great, we have lots of hills/mountains, & we still do get enough snow. For the $12k difference, I could get a cheaper pickup truck to drive in the winters. However, I feel like having AWD would make me feel more confident and combined with snow tires would still be capable, thus making it so I don't have to get a second vehicle.

So what's your winter driving experience been like with RWD F-Types? With the snow mode and snow tires, will the V8 S hold up fine in the winter? Or should I plan on just getting an R? Does the AWD make a difference to those of you up north?

Welcome to the Forums.

Lots of info on the 2 variants in the F Type Tech Section.

Members in your market area will have much better ideas than me.

Good luck.

Welcome to the forums brent1222,

All Jaguar models benefit from development and it is usually best to go for the latest available. However, with any used Jaguar, service history is critical and most two door model owners do so few miles that it should be done on a TIME basis.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f-type-x152-72/ to the F-Type forum for help, advice and information. You can also use the US Mid Atlantic Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/us-mid-atlantic-65/ to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums and the search for your F-Type.

F-type has very low clearance at the front, any substantial amount of snow will be an issue. Also, V8 with RWD and very fat rear tires is probably least ideal winter driving setup you can get.

More power to you if you want to have winter-beater F-type, but I would look for something more suitable for that purpose. Especially if roads are not great and you have to drive in the mountains.
