Hi Norwegian XJC

I also have a XJC ( in pieces ) 1977, no engine, and I am trying to decide which engine to fit, at the moment it is probably going to be the AJ16 , but probably normally aspirated, I have looked at the AJ6 because its simpler, but the ones or sale seem to have high mileages and the engine seems to not be as good as the AJ16 ?.

Keep in touch, we might compare notes, I am an electronics engineer so hope to be able to sort the electronics!

Jim

thank you GGG, i will do that.
your car looks great jim!i will folllow your project for sure.
im also hoping to use the aj16,with a charger and 5 speed and flywheel from a aj6 xj-s.
standalone ecu is the way to go on the supercharged engine i guess.
i have done haltech on a saab once so hopefully i will sort it out on the jag engine as well.

Hi norwegian xjc

Yes I looked at the possibility of an aftermarket ECU, but the cost put me off, plus the time and problems to get it working, it seems that the ECU will cost at least £600 and you need a Rolling road tune, minimum £400 so that means £1000 before you start,
I emailed the two big manufacturers here in the UK , one never bothered to answer and the other gave a one line answer ' we could probably get that engine working with our ECU but not the auto gearbox' this to me means that if they are not interested when you are offering them money...well I dont feel you would get any support for their product afterwards, Plus when you go on their websites, it just seems to be people with problems. I emailed a guy on another forum who had tried the Megasquirt with a AJ16s and gave up ! Not a simple fix I fear

From Rich W on another forum: re AJ16 in series 2

What I was told is that it can take a 60 - 1 wheel fine, but ask
the code to figure out how many delay teeth there are to the crank
sensor and it doesn't like 0 or minus numbers, as it has to see a
number of teeth before the gap to provide a reference. I got told
with the 60 tooth wheel there needed to be around 10 teeth between
crank sensor and the missing tooth, and that for a 36 - 1 wheel it
would be 6 teeth.
I tried a number of ways, and it didn't work with the stock trigger
wheel. A friend has an AJ6 that didn't work with the 60 - 3 wheel
that engine has had the same issue. He put a 36 - 1 on it, set it
up as per the manuals, and it runs sweet as a nut.
And it will, no doubt. The most I had out for mine was a brief
cough but my knowledge of megasquirt systems wasn't sufficient to
sort it. I know now that the AJ16's toothed wheel has its missing
tooth at TDC, which the megasquirt system doesn't like... so an
aftermarket trigger wheel will likely crack it.
I then got a so called 'expert' to look mine over but he set all
the parameters up for a V8 XJR engine and the AJ16S went from a
cough to stone dead.
Like I said though, I know it can be done and I will try again at
some point. I wouldn't disssuade anyone from having a go if they
are more competant with aftermarket systems. I was using MS2 as it
handles the idle speed control of the AJ16 - though I had fitted an
XJS distributor as it kept the coil and meant no tacho modification
to the S1 or its wiring.
--

The ECU issue was security. The XJR has a chip in the ignition key,
which is read by the security module, and unless evrything checks
out with another module the ECU won't crank the engine or fire the
injectors. You can get round the cranking issue by wiring the
starter directly, but it still won't supply fuel.
I gave a 4.0 XJ40 15CU ECU a shot and it did run the engine, though
very badly. If there were anyone out there capable of modifying the
maps in these you could probably get it running well as it started
readily enough.
I then tried megasquirt, but the AJ16 didn't like it running with
the stock sensors and trigger wheel. By this time I had got
depressed with the whole thing - so fitted the 3.6 to give my car
some life back.

thanks jim for sharing this!
if to use the stock setup with aut transmission:ecu, security modul and wiring harness.
is the key with the chip and the ignition lock the only thing who keeps it from starting?or do you know if there is other parts involved as well?

i did a engine swap in a mb 190 once, put a never e230 engine in it.it had same as the jag:ecu, security module and chip in the key.on that one i only wired 12v+ and ground to the security module on the right pin,on the security module it was 2 wires who went to the ecu those 2 read the key in ignition.just taped the igntion switch and key under the dash

Default XJC transplant

Hi

It would seem to me from what I have read that this would definately work for the AJ16 engine( but not for the V8).
I am now looking for a 4 litre AJ16 hopefully with a manual gearbox, it would seem cheaper and easier to buy a MOT test failure , I would hope that the normally aspirated 4 litre will be fast enough for me in a 35 year old car !
I have ordered from ebay the workshop manual on CD , I did this for the V8 and it was very helpfull, so when it comes I will go through it and see if there are easier ways! But I still have the LS400 lexus outside... if I can find a rear sump, I would be very tempted , 4 litre twin cam V8 300hp very relieable, and easy to transplant, although the purists will not approve I am sure

Jim,

I've copied your full post #8 to your thread in XJ6 section to help others considering a similar transplant.

Default XJc transplant keeping it stock ?

Lexus V8 in a series 2 ( not mine ) , You could take off the lexus emblem and put a jaguar growler on there , it would confuse people
