Hello and thanks for the help on the 2000 XJ8 already, it is a beautiful red with leather interior, 123K miles, although I drive it sometimes, it is owned by my girlfriends brother, who isn't very versed in mechanical things. The girlfriend's family has always had Jaguars, including a 1976 XJ6 sedan which apparently went through 8 transmissions. I don't know the details as to why on that one!
I work a lot on extended friends family cars but mostly pre 2002 Subarus, Hondas and Toyotas, but this is the first Jaguar.
As to understanding the car better, is there a complete workshop manual available at a decent price for this car, thanks again.

Welcome to the forum Robert,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

The factory Workshop Manual JTIS (Jaguar Technical Information System) is available as a free download in this General Tech Help thread:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/g...rchives-65926/

I can see you've already found your way to the X308 forum so there's no need for a link to it from me.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the US Western Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/western-us-ak-ca-nv-ut-hi-wa-id-38/
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.
