Default New need advice on x type

My son will be 16 soon. We are going to buy him a used 2004 to 2006 X-type for his first car. Research has shown that they are a very safe car, with all the air bags and all wheel drive. They are surprisingly cheap. I see them for $8995.00 to $12995.00 al over with miles in the 50 to 60K range. They are also beautiful cars. So what are the pitfalls? What should I look out for? Any insight would be helpful. As a side note the insurance is only $600.00 a year to add him with this car as a primary driver. Thank you in advance for advice. Bob

Depends on your son! If he's going to tromp on it from every stop light, the transfer case will probably fail prematurely. Other than that, you need to research the vehicles you are looking at. If maintenace has not been up to snuff, repairs can be more than on a comparable Chevy.

I realaize that anything can happen, and everyone says that their child is different. Mine actually is, he is attending a lutheran school and has every intention of becoming a pastor. He is not the hot rodder in the family, that would be me. I also have a 90 vette, 07 mustang gt convert, as well as a few other toys and family drivers.

hey there n welcome aboard
Your son is a lucky boy and I'm sure he knows it!

04-06 X type with good history and do your homework you should be good to go.....most of the early and simple issues on the 02's and 03's were fixed by the time the 04MY came about, so thats all good.
The TC is the weak point on these but don't sweat it, just make sure you do you homework and if you do go ahead, make sure you do the transfer case flush /refill procedure as posted here for peace of mind.
Thw AWD capability of these cars is amazing....a great winter car, very sure footed!
