Default New owner... of an old jag...1982 XJS

Hello
I am Robert, and purchased a 1982 XJS- it has about 78K miles on it. And the person we got it from had started to replace some parts- and 'got tired' of it. Looking at getting it going- I do have some mechanical experience, but I am having some issues and looking forward to some ideas/help. So onto some basics....

I am in the U.S. Northwest- Idaho to be more specific. I will add photo and more info as I get used to this. I am not sure the exact series, I do have a Haynes repair manual- but its the fuel injected 5.3 V-12, has to run on premium gas. I think its the series 3... but again, I am not positive.
Actually bought the car as a project for my son and I... so we could work on it, and get it going. Most of my friends just joke about my son driving it when we get it running. He is only 16 right now.
The engine was partly disassembled.... intakes off, A/C missing, new injector hose kit, wiring, new distributor cap, plugs and wires. Oh- and the air pump is gone too. Former owner said he was on a forum and learned it was not really needed- so he planned to take it out. The A/C- I did not realize it was missing until I got going thru the box of parts he gave me.... and he has moved, so I can't ask him about it.
Right now- airpump inlets to the exhaust I have plugged. Intakes are back on. Distributor seems all set- new cap and wires in place. I have new air filters to put on it. I have redone the injector wiring and replaced a bunch of the wiring that is brittle and heat damaged.

Now where I am... is figuring out wiring... everything was unplugged and having issues determining what plugs into where... as an example- the ignition booster has 4-wires coming out of it... plus the 3-on the plug. The Haynes manual only shows 3-wires coming off it... so.... I am a bit confused.

Thank you- looking forward at learing and getting this red beauty going. I openly joke the hood will sleep 6... there is nothing like it in town. Thank you again

Welcome to the Forums.

Sounds like it is what is known as the HE spec car. 1982 is right on the cusp of the change.

Giveaway is the "Black Box" AB14 Ignition Amp bolted to the B Bank (LH) Inlet manifold.

If that is so, I suggest mentioning that as part of your Sig, so we older V12 people dont forget the beast you are sorting.

They are SIMPLE, so time and TIME is all that is needed.

I have several stickies at the top of the XJS Tech Section that will help, and many more available on request.

Your market HE is 11.5:1 comp ratio, the rest of us got the 12.5:1 beast, and premium fuel is preferred for sure.

Good luck

thank you.... I wondered about the ignition amp... the manual has it bolted, center, behind the A/C compressor- and the bracket for it is gone. The bolt holes in the intake are same space as the amp... I was going to bolt it there. I will do Left side since you mentioned it. THank you!
