Just wanna say g'day

Sadly, I've never been mechanically minded, but I've always wanted to own a MK II. Is this a preposterous idea for someone who doesn't know much about cars? Is it at all a realistic proposition for someone living in Sydney? I wonder how much it would cost to maintain it...

In any case, hello to you all!

Welcome, depends on where you live but there are a number of good Jag specialists around that would be useful. I suggest you give Gary at Cremorne Prestige in Artarmon a ring about parts and costs
Cheers
Mike

Thank you

I'm in Gordon, so Artarmon is within reach for sure.

I don't actually have a Jaguar yet (you don't need to be an owner to join the forum right?). But yeah, just wanted to assess feasibility of potentially owning one, like roughly how much to service, parts availability etc, and of course, how to pick a good one.

I've read around and saw that rust can be a big problem with these cars, as well as electrical wiring. But yeah, please tell me now if I'm being stupid for even thinking about owning a MK II (I've been driving a Corolla for 15 years and just get it serviced at local servo).

No need to be an Owner no. All your questions for Sydney could be asked of the Service Tech with a simple phone call and who would be happy to help. Have you seen one yet? If you arent technically minded then you will want it fully checked out so the sooner you have a friendly tech the better.

Just as a guess I imaging it will be much more expensive to run than a Corolla
Cheers

Thanks Mike.

My Corolla does a regular annual service at about $500-1000/year, depending on what needs to be done. The Corolla's petrol consumption must be heaps better than the MK II, I'd imagine.

I'm guessing classic car insurance may be a little cheaper? My Corolla's insurance runs at ~$600/year.

Welcome aboard , it certainly isn't preposterous to want to own any classic but I would suggest reading and getting as much info from the members here that you can. I will add you to the NSW &ACT roll and you can visit the link below for regional topics. Some good advice also from Mike (Ozmag)....

Welcome to the forum gp38,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

There two qualifications for running a Jaguar - either a well stocked tool box or a well stocked wallet. Routine servicing is neither complex nor costly but repairs/restoration on an older model can easily exceed the cost of a new car.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/mki-mkii-s-type-240-340-daimler-61/ to the MKI/MK2 forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham

Welcome.

As said, regular maintenence is not far from any other car on the road.

BUT, getting any older car, and Jag is no exception, UP TO STANDARD (catch up as we all call it), can be the same as a house in Sydney.

After that you are cruising.

The best part is learning about that car as you go, so bit by bit, YOU maintain your own classic, always within your growing capability, priceless.

Welcome to the forum, I agree with all the comments above.
The satisfaction of walking in to your garage and knowing the car you are eye balling is still on the road because of your effort to keep it there and the amazing amount of help from these forums.
Have a go, if it doesn't work out for you I'm sure there is plenty corolla owners happy to help you out with a new car.

Good luck

Thank you for the warm welcome and collective wisdom everyone

But yeah, as mentioned in my intro, I'm mechanically challenged, and I'm intimidated by the prospect of having to DIY or exorbitant repair costs.

I might have a look a general car maintenance books/youtube first, before even beginning to contemplate a Jaguar. I'm an absolute beginner and gotta crawl before running. Any recommendation for absolute basic intro to car maintenance (I can see a few by Googling, but just wondering if you have personal recommendations)? I'm so sorry if this is not the right forum or place for this type of advanced forum. Just one of those things I never learnt as a teenager, along with anything DIY...

Oh, but the MK II is so beautiful!
