New XK8 Owner
I recently inherited a 1998 XK8 convertible which is garaged in Greensboro, GA.
The car was purchased by my Brother In Law and has 35,000 original miles and has been garaged its entire life. Most of the miles were put on in the first 4 years until he died from cancer in 2005, Since then my Sister In Law has driven the vehicle sparingly but has had it serviced by a local mechanic who works primarily on foreign cars.
I will be calling the selling dealer in Roswell, GA to see if they can provide information on the service history thru the VIN. I tried getting this info from the Jag dealer in San Antonio be he said they could only recall service that was done by their dealership. In the meantime I am researching all technical bulletins and recalls along with forum members history of their XK8 troubles.
and and unfortunately my Sister In Lawthe
My plan is to drive the vehicle back to San Antonio if all checks out okay. I an trying to make a list of those tools or any other items I should carry with me. One thing I have need to know is are most of the tools metric or SAE?
Wish me luck.

My Jaguar, much older than yours, has a curious mix of metric and SAE bolt/nuts. But that's no problem here because husband is a confirmed Tool Geek. Unfortunately I can't help you with your car.

Welcome to the forum XK8 Comfort,
Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums. Sorry to hear you became an owner in such sad circumstances.
One of your other posts is regarding tensioners so no need to tell you about the dangers of early plastic ones breaking up and causing severe engine damage. The other thing that would immediately concern me on the vehicle is cooling system hoses. These deteriorate with time as well as mileage. Your journey home looks to be around 1100 miles through some hot country so keep an eye on engine temperature and don't rely on the gauge to warn of an overheat.
The one tool I'd definitely carry is a cheap scantool. It's almost always possible to find someone with wrenches but getting error codes read is often harder.
I can see you've already found your way to the XK8/XKR forum so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.
Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Metric. And I've found Jaguar likes to use lots of flange bolts with very tiny heads, like 6 or 7mm. Also some torx screws along with phillips heads. For an emergency tool kit, I'd suggest a 1/4 inch drive metric socket set and a torx bit set along with a 3/8s drive socket set. Mostly captured nuts, so other than for tight spaces, not a whole lot of call for standard wrenches (or spanners if you prefer). If you have the luggage space, a set of metric gearwrench would be good to have along. But only so much you might attempt on the side of the road anyway, so rather than a lot of heavy duty tools, a AAA Premier membership might be in order. Good luck on your trip back to Texas. Sounds like tho its in good shape so you won't have any trouble.
