I recently purchased a 1990 XJS Convertible with ~81k miles. It has rock hard brakes, and a major gasoline odor from the trunk. But when the PO fired up the engine, and it purred, I bought it. No test drive. No checking on what works and what doesn't. So I expect as I move forward on restoring this, I'll be here a lot.
My prerequisites for an XJS V12 Newbie are :
A sense of humour, the more warped the better.
Ability to speak strange words, preferably away from "young ears"
Sleepless nights, hell yes.
Learn to WALK AWAY, the car will wait, and your sanity remains intact.
NEVER try to work out "why is this like this", it just is, MOVE ON.
Fill the beer fridge, regularly.
These are AWESOME cars, as made in Coventry, and when yours is in that state, you will love it.
When you get to the XJS Tech Section, there are heaps of stickies well worth a beer or 3 and read them.
Your car is what is known as a Marelli Engine Management system, remember that please.
Good luck.
