Welcome to this friendly Forum, John.follow Norri's advice and enjoy your membership.
The most serious problem to avoid is plastic timing chain tensioners so look for 2003 or later.

Welcome to the forum John,

Good advice from Norri.

Service / Maintenance history is critical when looking for any Jaguar. Any gaps in history need careful questioning.

Good luck and enjoy thr search.

Graham

Default tensioners

I had a Q45 with the same issues.......but they did away with them pretty eraly on.......they did not wait until 2003.....Seems like the JAG people would have picked up on that.......I think all those dohc had this issue......

Johnny,
Don't assume anything - if the engine (not the car) was made before August 13, 2001 the tensioners must be replaced.

To be absolutely safe, don't get a Jaguar with the the 4.0 liter V8, then you won't have to worry about chain tensioners/water pump and whether or not they were up-graded. Get a 2003 or later model with the 4.2 liter or 2010 or later with the the 5.0. No worries at all with the two later engines. Don't be seduced by the low prices on the earlier (prior to 2003) models. There are reasons for those prices.

I'm not aware of Jaguar producing but one 6 cylinder turbocharged car and that was the V6 Jaguar XJ220 in 1992. It was what was and is considered a "super car" and the "220" in its name stood for 220 mph. They are very rare, collectible, and cost a lot of money. Jaguar has traditionally gone with in-line 6 cylinders, V8s, and now a new V6 (in the Jaguar F-Type that will be released in a few months) and SUPERCHARGED them for their highest performance cars.
