Default Prospective XJR6 owner...

Hi guys, i'm just looking around trying to broaden my knowledge before taking the plunge on an R.

I'm leaning toward the 95-97 XJR over the 98-03 XJR due to the 6 being more reliable and bulletproof.

I love to own vehicles that give me the best bang for teh buck, my 97 Volvo 850 T5 has been a rock-solid, 280hp(remapped), 156mph tank for over two years and i'd like to eventually have a ~400hp car that requires little time of me being under it..

The next is the 2000 S430, 235,000 miles, solid as a rock! Had it since '05. Maybe i've been lucky but I have removed the original air struts for a set of springs/strut setup.

If there's any input you guys want to give regarding my future purchase of said Jaaag, please do. I'm pretty sure I want one, just have to find one that has minimal rust, newer rear bushings, lower coolant hose replaced. I hear the I6 is bulletproof but truthfully a car is as good as its owner.

Sounds like you already know what to look for but there's a buyers guide at the top of the X300 section...in one of the sticky topics/threads.

Yeah, the engine isn't likely to give trouble. Listen for differential and wheel bearing noise, though. The 4L80E trans is good if the fluid has been changed a few times during the life of the car.

Good luck finding one with the lower hose already replaced :-)

If you find a good one the XJR6 is a lot of car for very little money....just what you wanted.

Cheers
DD

Thanks Doug, I just read through the buyers' guide, it seems to be as strong as my 850 Turbo with one or two weak spots.

Do you know anything about upping the boost? I'd like to get ~370hp without doing a thing to the exhaust. Will this be possible?

A couple outfits were selling a pulley to increase boost....not sure if they're still out there. I heard from only a couple guys who tried 'em and they ended up removing them.....the air charge apparently became over heated very quickly, negating the power increase very soon after the initial ooomph.

I installed one of Andy Stoddart's timing brackets and a 3.58 diff (versus standard 3.27) and felt a good improvement after both changes. Andy can also re-map the ECU.

Cheers

Ok I did read of XJREngineer earlier, I guess peak power would be around 350 with a tune and bracket.

I see you have one of his brackets, did you install it yourself? Is it a DIY job?

I've never owned an S/C car, your enlightenment is greatly appreciated.
Maybe you won't mind pming me the cost of Andy's materials..(tune/bracket)

Edit: read most of Andy's bracket thread, simple install.

On my list of mods, seems to have been R&Dd enough.

Thanks for your help Doug.

You're in for a treat.

The real beauty is the abundance of torque over a wide rpm range. It hardly matters what gear you're in or what your road speed is.....there's always plenty of ooomph. Not at all peaky.

I'm glad you mention that. My 850T is anemic at full throttle off the line til about 3.5Krpm, then BOOM, rush of power 4K-6Krpm. I've adjusted the wastegate settings but this is as good as I can get it.

The S430 has power off the line, but loses thrust at 4K compared to the 850. It's not slow, but maintains a steady rate of acceleration from 2.5K-6Krpm.

I've driven an '03 E55 ///AMG (5.4S/C) that had thrust EVERYWHERE in the rpm range. The Jaaag is down 130+lb/ft of torque but i'm sure it'll pull hard at all speeds.

Yeah, good to keep expectations in check because the XJR6 won't be anything like the AMG Mercedes in terms of power and acceleration.

In its day the XJR6 was competetive....0-60 in about 6.6 seconds......but the XJR8 is much faster, as are later offerings from other manufacturers.

Still, though, the XJR6 has a satisfying amount of oooomph and is a sweetheart to drive.

The only driving bugboo with the XJR6 is tramlining.....sometimes severe tramlining. Tires can make a big difference here, among other things, but be ready for it.

Cheers

I had a brief tramlining issue with the 850T on used tires...bought brand new Y rated ones and the tramming is gone.

I'm sure the Jag will be the same.
