Cool What are the odds?

Good day all you ladies and gentlemen out there.

It is with great pleasure that I announce that my next car will be a Jag-- my first Jag, actually. I have $12,000 saved and ready for the price of the car I choose and any emergency maintenance or repair parts that need to be done in the near future.

Today, I drove the first Jag I've ever driven: a 1996 Jaguar XJ6 base model in blue/grey with off-white leather interior. It has 116,000 miles on it and drives pretty well despite its age. I liked the feeling of the car, but the exterior/interior color combination seemed very bland to me. Mechanically, the car's in great condition as it has been taken care of regularly maintained by the second owner who is a retired British-car mechanic who now restores Jags, Rovers, and others for hobby. Even with the low $5000 asking price ($3800 KBB value), I simply had to pass it up. I'm 6'4" and the X300 interior just doesn't cut it; I hate the feeling of my hair rubbing against the ceiling. And my hair isn't even puffy!

So, here I am, on the Jaguar Forums, searching for what might be my next perfect car. Here is what I'm looking for:

- Daily driver reliability (50 miles/day)
- Buying price @ no more than $8000 (but prefer less, obviously).
- Decent power, but reliability is more important.
- Black on black, preferably, but the British racing green/tan combo is nice as well.
- Enough head room for my 6'4" frame! This is a big one.
- ~100,000 miles or less.

In my research so far, I've learned that the 95-97 X300 XJs are quite reliable and even "bulletproof" as some may suggest. I wouldn't mind an X300 XJ6 if the vertical interior space wasn't so dire.

My question to you all is: will an X308 or early X350 XJ meet my specifications?

Thanks much in advance. This forum seems to be the best online Jag community out there.

Welcome to the forum Matt,

If the seating position in an X300 is not to your liking then an X308 will be almost identical. You need to try both an X308 and an X351 for this basic essential on your requirements list before proceeding or sadly a Jaguar is not going to be the car for you.

Follow this link XJ ( X308 ) XJ8 / XJR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X308 section and this one XJ ( X350 & X358 ) XJ6 / XJ8 / XJR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X351 section for help, advice and information.

We have a number of equally tall and taller members across the model sections and they may be able to help.

Hope you find the right Jaguar for you.

Enjoy the forum.

Graham

Welcome also.

Reading your requirements carefully, so as not to miss something.

This is my thoughts, and a tad drawn out, but I do NOT want to confuse the prospects here.

We just purchased an S Type Jag, as a replacement for the XJ-S. her car, mine is the X300 base model.

The XJ-S was an issue for me, at 6' and a bit, but mainly the "hump" I have to drag my half leg over to get in and out of it, so I got the X300, much more room, but still that "hump", causing grief for that leg, and getting worse as I get older.

S Type, NO GOT that hump, SWEET, and heaps more head room, and the seat goes waaaaaay back.

OK, very different car to the XJ, but hell I like it for many reasons, other than what I mentioned. Please note, the S Type is NOT everyone's choice, and I was like that until I drove this one prior to buying it. A lot of Hoo-ha out there about the model, and some are fair.

I do seem to remember when I attended the release of the X350, that the headroom was increased, due to customer complaints, but that was a loooong time ago, and I am not 100% sure anymore, so hopefully someone from the X350 section lends some info here??.

Right on guys! Thanks for the warm welcome and nods in the right direction.

I've just posted a thread in the X308 forum to see if they have any suggestions. I'm also just doing the basic research on common or semi-common maintenance items that I want to be aware of when I go and check out some more of these kitties in the real world.

Thanks again,

Matt
