Where to start?
I just bought an 2004 XJR it has 95,000 miles,it had one owner a doctor. It seem to be in good condition,it's beautiful looking, but I want do all the maintenance that is required for a car with that many miles.Where should I start?
My first question is - has the car been properly serviced by the previous owner(s) ? If it has, then you have less to worry about. You should have at least some evidence of servicing as part of the sale to you.First off, I would check oil and coolant levels. Is the oil looking particularly dirty ? if it is, replace oil and filter. Has the coolant been changed? If not it is due on age alone. Next thing is to check brake pads and brake fluid. From what I can see here in the UK, and as a member of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, DIY maintenance is feasible on these cars, there are no special tools needed for routine maintenance. At 95,000 miles, however, it is likely there will be one or two little, (maybe BIG !!) jobs to do in addition to routine maintenance, that is why an inspection is recommended and up on a lift if possible so you can get underneath. If well looked after these cars will go to Mars and back. There is a recall on this car for rear brake lines which sit behind a cover underneath the car and which are surrounded by sound deadening material which absorbs moisture, , making the pipes vulnerable to corrosion. There is also a TSB on a transmission reprogramme. A Jaguar main agent should be able to tell you if these have been done from the VIN number
