Default Xenon headlight problem Jaguar XE

Hi, I am new to this forum, hello everyone. My problem is an intermittent fault on the drivers side full beam headlight, sometimes it works sometime not. My Jag model is the 2017 XE R SPORT. After trawling through lots of web pages I am even more confused. I know the headlights are xenon but do they have two bulbs or one and is it possible to change them yourself. I have also heard someone mention a shutter which operates high and low beam using only one bulb. Ive looked inside the headlight through the round hole but cant really work much out at all. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums Kev,

After looking at the Owner's Handbook and the Parts Catalogue, I can understand your confusion! The suggestion is that Halogen headlamps are serviceable but Xenon are not. Members with the same model will know more.

From the Workshop Manual:
All exterior lighting circuits are protected by Field Effect Transistors (FETs), located in the BCM/GWM assembly, which can detect overloads and short circuits.

The FETs respond to heat generated by increased current flow caused by a short circuit. On a normal circuit this would cause the fuse to blow. The FETs respond to the heat increase and disconnect the supply to the affected circuit. When the fault is rectified or the FET has cooled, the FET will reset and operate the circuit normally. If the fault persists the FET will cycle, disconnecting and reconnecting the power supply. The BCM/GWM assembly stores fault codes which can be retrieved using a Jaguar approved diagnostic system. The fault code will identify that there is a fault on a particular output which assist in fault detection.

This most likely explains the intermittent fault. Unfortunately troubleshooting will require Jaguar SDD (Symptom Driven Diagnostics) to see if there are relevant DTC's (fault codes).

Fortunate as this could be an expensive repair. Let us know how you get on.
