Default Considering a Mercedes Pre-1999? I'm your guY!

Hey all.

If any of you are considering a Mercedes Pre-1999, I am your man for knowledge.

I know of many of the common problem spots of many of the cars from the past and owned a W124 myself for some time (great car!)

If anyone has any questions just ask!

Cheeers.

I don't usually like to buy car parts off eBay unless they are an eBay retailer.

Over the years I've always stuck with www.autopartswarehouse.com.

They have a huge stock pile of all kinds of parts and I believe is the main supplier to many shops and dealers worldwide, from 3rd party manufacturers to OEM manufacturers. But the good part is that you get all of the parts at wholesale price.

Check it out.

Another place for Mercedes Parts that has great rep over at teh Benz community is AutohauzAZ.

You will be my best friend chinny4290... my dad and I got this '88 300 ce some time ago and are working on it.

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w124...raigslist.html

the pictures are from were/when we got the car... now it is taken apart; we are working on the sunroof, passenger side door (small fender-bender)...

we noticed that all the plastic parts are very brittle and break so easy... is this common on the w124 of this year?

is there a way to adjust the spark/timing/idle? it idles at 1200 rpm... i think it should be more like 900 rpm.

also, I think the 1-2 shift selenoid went out.. when driving from stop, it does not feel like all the torque is there... like it starts driving in 2nd gear...

Very nice.

Germans tend to have cheaper than expected build quality when a new car is released, so thus earlier in the production range they are in model years, the cheaper they seem to be. For example, yes there are considerable differences in your 300CE versus my E320 Coupe.

As for the idle, a high idle usually means there's a vacuum leak somewhere. I never had to deal with a high idle because my M104 3.2 I6 was electronically controlled. Your 300CE has a M103 I6 and is electro-mechanically controlled. A quick search in either the W124 or the W126 forums will yield some answers.

As for the transmission, earlier Mercedes-Benzes came from the factory with 2nd gear start modules, which was designed for the American market, with fuel economy and snow starts in mind. So what you're experiencing is 100% normal. You can order the European first-gear-start module. I've never had to go about this because my E320 was built when they virtually rid of the 2nd-gear start. Again, this is another widely discussed topic on Benzworld and you should not have an issue finding help.

Best of luck!
