Pricing advice on a damaged 4.0 XJ8 engine

Hi all,
I'm trying to help out a neighbor who isn't very Internet literate. To make a long story short, his engine most likely ate a couple ofvalves (left head) and his shop talked him into replacing the entire engine with a used one rather than opening his up to see the extent of the damage. The engine still ran prior to being pulled although I'm told the valve train clattered severely. They also replaced the catalytic converter due to oil fouling. I told him I thought there might be a market for the used one even though it's damaged. He spent almost as much as the car was worth on the used engine install and I like to see if there's a way for him to recoup even a small amount of what he's out. I was going to initially throw it up on eBay but I have no idea what it might be worth. The shop told him at least two cylinders are dead but because they didn't do any disassembly, that's about as good a description of the damage as I can give. The engine is out of a 2000 XJ8 and had 81K on it before all the trouble happened. Any advice as to it's value (if any) would be greatly appreciated. TIA...

you can probably get 5 or 600 for it. There are many people who will pull it apart and fix to replace what was in their 98 99 xj or xk to get rid of nicasil. Put it on ebay with starting bid at 250.00 or so. Be honest in the description.
