2000 4.0 (DIY) replacement –Timing chains, Tensioners, Water pump, etc, etc. FAQ
Thank you TDC very much for this entire posting. This is my first DIY maintenance project. Paid $2300 to have this done only to find out 2000 miles later that 2nd gen secondary tensioners were used and they are now starting to come apart like the originals. I have purchased 3rd gen parts and want to perform all maintenance here on out myself so I can be assured of proper techniques used for Jaguar maintenance. This thread will put me in fine shape. Thank you again!
Here is my Q to all you jag addicts when you remove valve cover on driver side how do you manage to get it out? When I tried ithe fuel line was in the way of oil cap. ( Had to remove fuel ingector line to get it out now I need new o rings ) I feel stupid.
Excellent tdc !! I am going through the same process right now with my 02 s type, two questions, is the timing sensor on the bottom of the engine bell housing ? Two .... Witch piston is number one ? First on drivers side or first on pasenger side ?
Any input from other members is also appreciated ...
Thanks !!

LoysJag; I sure hope you are not attempting this repair without the JTIS??
All that is in there plus much more and the JTIS is free on this site. Get the JEPC too as the exploded diagrams are better than what the JTIS has.

Guys the problem with the pictures stems from how the original poster put them in. They used some offsite photo hosting service. These type of outfits never stay in business forever. So when they are gone it breaks the link to our forum. Nobody can get those pictures back now.
If you want to do it properly please upload the picture to this forum. That way all the pictures will stay in place as long as this forum survives.

I can't dig in to someone else's Photobucket account, but JimLombardi did a pretty decent set of pdf files for an S Type 4.0 Timing chain job.
Have a look at this thread.

Crap. Next question is: if you order a kit to replace 2002 and earlier tensioners, will the improved 2003 and up be part of that kit? I'd hate to do the tear down work described here....only to replace these items that are potentially just as bad. There are a handful of Non-dealer Jaguar specialty shops that will do the labor if I provide the parts.

Yes. You want to purchase and install the "4th generation" timing parts (all metal) for the 4.0 engine. (I don't believe the 4.2 parts are interchangeable - I could be wrong) and yes, there have been 3 revisions from the original design. There have been reported failures with 2nd gen versions... Hope this helps..
Hi Has anyone still got the actual pictures to this valuable old thread

Can anyone reload them. Going to look at the following instead to gain more insight on the full timing chain, guide and tensioner job.
