"Creaking" noise coming from front end

Hi all, This is my first post to this forum. I have an 2003 S Type 3.0 with 67k on the odo. I have recently notice a kind of popping creaking noise coming from what seems like the front of the vehicle. It is most noticeable on smooth pavement at low speeds. Sometimes it seems like it is coming from the left, sometimes the right, and sometimes in the very center. It is very difficult to pinpoint the source. It doesn't seem to be caused by rough pavement or bumps. It happens while the steering wheel is straight or turned. I have crawled under the vehicle and found nothing loose in the steering components including the tierods and balljoints. motormounts and transmission mounts appear fine as do the swaybar bushings. I am wondering if the sound could be coming from the struts, particularly the rubber spring pads. Has anyone experienced this before? I am at a loss as it sounds like something is loose, but everything appears good underneath.
Have you changed your swaybar bushings lately? I had an "old-door" type of creaking after installing new bushings. I had to take them off and apply some graphite lube to quiet them down.
Noises are difficult to diagnose on the internet but common problems that cause creaking noises are dry tie rod end and ball joint sockets. The noise these make is most noticeable on undulating pavement and driveway entrances rather than hard bumps. If you have a needle oiler you can put some lube into the boots of the mentioned components one at a time untill you correct the problem and then you will know which one to replace. I would start with the outer tie rod ends as these are the most common.

Thanks for the responses. I will check the the things you guys suggested. The noise is most noticeable at low speeds on smooth surfaces. It definitely does not seem related to bumps or rough surfaces. It will make the noise on a completely flat road with no undulations or uneveness. The car is otherwise extremely quiet and this noise is very annoying and embarrasing when you have guests in the car.
