Question 01 stype 4.0 v8 trans problem

My mom's 01 put up a trans. fault light today and doesn't feel like it will go into the last gear. I know you have to take it to someone who has the machine to put the ATF in. That was a brilliant idea... thanks again engineers!!!! any ideas??

An 01 will be the Ford 5R55N so search for threads about that here and via google. Any good trans shop should know the box as it's quite common. It has a known issue with a broken spring, which may be the cause. I wouldn't assume it is - but also don't assume it just wants an ATF change. A trans specialist should be able to help.

However, bear in mind that it may not be a trans problem - the car has just done it's best to say what it thinks is wrong, but it doesn't necessarily KNOW. If there are any codes then they are clues as to what the car thinks is wrong.

Be sure and get the codes read for free at AutoZone or some other parts store. If you have the following errors. P0734, P0735 or P0795 and the car will not shift into 5th gear. You might have a broken spring in the transmission. It's known as the "4-3 Pre stroke spring".

her jaguar mechanic that she uses says that it is a pressure regulator for the shift solenoids and that it is going into limp mode.

Be sure and get the codes read!! You are flying blind without that. It could be the solenoid pack and it will be MUCH cheaper if you get the Lincoln part. But first lets make sure what the problem is??

well that is what the guy says is wrong with it. Can you give me the Lincoln part numbers?? He says 375 for labor and 525 for parts. He also told her that the jag place would charge her 2500 for parts and labor. I could do it myself if I had a way of putting the ATF in. That filling through the pan and not having a dipstick is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of engineered into a car!!!!

The transmission solenoid pack part number for a 2002 Lincoln LS is:XW4Z-7G391AF
From what he is saying he might be aware and use the Lincoln part. I have heard this piece is somewhere in the $350-$500 range for the parts from the Lincoln dealer?? I have not checked to see how much it would cost online?

Very common on new cars to not have a dipstick. This is even spreading to the engine oil dipstick. Certain BMW's have no oil dipstick just an electronic level sensor and an oil change indicator light on the dash.

thanks for the part number. It was so bad that it wouldn't even shift gears and went into limp mode. She got it to her Jaguar guy and he replaced the shift solenoid pack and then it would work until it got hot. He removed it again and the valvebody and found a spring broke. So we are waiting on a spring now.

The broken spring is a common failure for the Ford 5R55N, so common that google easily finds it! Any decent tranny shop should be able to fix it.
