Oh I agree with you 110% on keeping a scanner, plus we have the ability to clear codes. BUT now all we need is the IDS software lol... Maybe I'm dreaming but how hard COULD it be to get a copy...

Getting the software is easy but it uses special (proprietary) hardware. Fakes are sold on ebay but apparently don't work reliably (or at all?). Honestly, do you want to risk it? I can't afford to.

What could be the harm in reading with it??, if you can get it to work? I'd buy an instrument cluster off ebay or something and try to code it, (while keeping my original cluster intact).

Don't do it. Not with a cluster. Or if you do, get a full set (all relating to PATS) and set them all up on a workbench.
