Default 04 S Type R bad transmission?

Hello guy it's been awhile, we'll I'm back in the market for a Jag and they offering me a 04 STR with 107k miles, auto, clean title for $3500 but the situation is that the transmission is making a noise. My question is would a transmission from a 3.0/4.0/4.2 be all the same, cause I have found several off 4.0's cheap. Thanks in advance guys.

If its a clean car, talk them down on price and then have the trans in it built by a good shop. Worst case, you could part out a R at that price and make some $$$. I bet they gave some one $500 on it if it was a trade in.

IPT Performance Transmissions | Performance Parts | Torque Converters has our trans listed on their site under BMW. They build top quality units, or they will sell you parts if you just want to have another shop work on it.

the 4.0l cars are the pre 2003 models and use a different (ford) gearbox. I think all the later models use the same gearbox.

Take it to a transmission shop. If trans. and/or torque convrter is beat, talk the dealer down to $2900. Have the trans./torque converter rebuilt or procure a rebuilt ZF6 speed. How does she look inside/out? This may be a diamond in the rough...cheap purchase then $3-4 grand to invest?
