Default 05 STR Cannot apply park break

Hi guys,

Last year my handbrake failed after the car battery was drained, i replaced it and one year later after my battery was drained again... the new one failed too. Same symptoms. It attepts but fails to activate.

https://youtube.com/shorts/6xmICGZNiRU?feature=shared

I calibrated it, I restarted the handbrake module, nothing seems to fix the problem and I m not very keen on spending another 700 euros for a new handbrake. Did you guys ever encounter this?

Not getting any errors on my Launch Elite V tool.

Thanks!

You have not specified, HOW you calibrated it. I actually had recently the opposite failure (also due to low battery): The el. hand brake would not disengage anymore:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...t-move-290755/

And the procedures, which I found, were (as I also point out in my thread above:
>>>
The electronic handbrake (EPB) fault in the Jaguar S-Type can be a common issue, and several solutions have been reported by owners and forums. One common solution is to reset the EPB module by disconnecting the battery for a period of time. For example, disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes, then reconnecting it and following a specific procedure to recalibrate the system. This involves applying the footbrake, switching the parking brake on, and then releasing the footbrake while turning the ignition off and on again.
>>>
or;;;:
>>>
disconnecting the negative battery cable for 10 minutes, then reconnecting it and starting the engine. The system may display a message like "Apply park brake," and the driver should pump the brakes while holding the foot brake pedal and pulling up the park brake switch handle.
>>>

I can hear in your video the "stuttering attempt" of the handbrake to engage...

When disconnecting the battery, I would also do a cold reset (i.e. holding the disconnected cable onto the cable of the other polarity).

And to avoid a drained battery in the future, consider buying a CTEK battery charger 10A or 15A.

I hope others have additional idea of how to solve your problem.

Note aside: Have you checked that your rotors (= brake discs) are above the minimum thickness and that your brake pads are not worn off too much?

PS: As you are from Bavaria: 15 Euro for a Mass (=1 liter) of beer at this year's Octoberfest is really only an option for tourists, i.e. it may be about time for the locals to come up with a secret Novemberfest for the locals only, where the price of beer is affordable... My uncle lives in Munich, and he did not go there anymore since many years....

Hi Peter

Yeah 15 euros a liter is a rip off. Anyone would advise you to visit the smaller fairs in the communities around Munich, prices are lower and you get tourists, but not the obnoxious ones.

I calibrated the handbrake by following the instructions in the instrument cluster. It worked perfectly after installing the new handbrake april last year. Actually I removed the battery pole once since then and calibrated it again and worked fine. It only stopped functioning after battery drainage. First time my handbrake failed I blamed it on age/ me washing the car's underneath. Now I m almost sure it was battery related.

Anyway I tried everything you said together with my mechanic, but nothing sadly worked.

My brakes in general are almost brand new.

The issue with parkbrake stuck on is more popular/ annoying and it s mostly module related. You find many articles in that regard, but none about my issue. Been struggling since April with this, only parking on perfectly even roads etc. I can't use a charger in my underground parking, I m lucky enough to rent a parking spot

Thanks!

I found this - maybe is gives additional ideas:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...g-brake-34562/

Quickly looking thru it I see in post #2: Or maybe there is a fault with the actuator.
and in post #7: The R is the only one where there are separate pads for the parking brake.

Your is a R (STR). I.e. checking your normal brake pads is not doing the trick - you have to check the specific hand-brake pads in your STR...
Also look at post #12 & #13: Did you current module or the old one (or the cable or whatever) accidentally activate the hand-brake pads which driving and wear out those pads?

And post #17: Fuse 35 in trunk fuse box.
And look at #37

And maybe the calibration instructions in post #2 are better then what I have sent before - the instruction in post #2 are the same as in TB (technical bulletin) S206-04 from 08/05

Given that last time when my car had the exact same behavior, the problem was solved by installing a new parking brake i also tend to believe the integrated actuator is defective. I will check the fuses you mentioned later today and let you know what i found. Thanks Peter!
