Sounds like a bad instrument cluster and it is raising hell with the ECM. But, I don't have the diagrams in front of me to verify that. Let me get home and I will see what I can find for you.
For the moment, I would probably tell you to reset teh computer and make a note not to touch the tripometer for the time being.
