Default 2000 S-type - Engine won't turn off

Hello Everyone,

I need help! I'm not a mechanic and I'm not familiar with technical terminology.
I went out to my 2000 Jaguar S type 3.0 after work and it wouldn't start. I had a message on the console that said "fuel computer error". I looked online and somebody said to disconnect the battery for 20 minutes then reconnect and try to start, which I did twice but it did not work. Then, just for the hell of it I got a jump from a friend and sure enough it started. I drove the car home which is about a 20 minute trip and everything ran fine. I went to get out of my car and took the key out of the ignition and as I was getting out I realize that my engine was still running. I had to disconnect the fuel pump fuse to get it to stop running. now it's sitting in my parking lot, it won't start and I can't afford a huge mechanic bill, so I'm not sure what to do next.
has anybody else experienced anything similar to this? Any ideas on how I can go about getting this fixed as cheaply as possible or even fixing this myself?
thank you in advance for your help it is greatly appreciated!

Might be a faulty ignition switch. It may also have flattened your battery.

Thank you for the quick response. I did take my battery in to AZ and got it tested; they said it's fine. Will a diagnostic test reveal a faulty ignition switch?

I wouldn't expect so, you are going to have to do some old fashioned troubleshooting, the switch would be a good place to start.

If you are not a mechanic then you have the wrong car.
I would sell it and get something much more simple and down scale instead of a Jaguar.

Ford owned Jaguar when they made my own car. It has a Lincoln LS transmission and engine. They also completely redid the electrical system for it. so basically it's a Ford with a Jaguar body.
plus, I don't think it would be very smart to sell my car while its having electrical problems.
thank you for all of your insight though.

Contrary to common belief and myth, the Jaguar S-Type AJ28 V8 was not designed nor engineered by Ford. Ford used a variant of the Jaguar-designed AJ-V8 in the Lincoln LS and Ford Thunderbird, not the other way around.

+1 on checking or replacing the ignition switch; inspecting relays and selling the vehicle once it has been repaired if you are not able to perform maintenance and repairs yourself.

Not that it really matters but mine's a 3.0 not 4.0. I appreciate everyone's help but I think it's ridiculous to say that of you're not a mechanic you shouldn't own a Jag. Also, I never asked if I should sell it, I'm asking how to fix it. I do appreciate any/all responses though. (Especially those regarding how to fix this issue) Thanks!

The point is that if you can't DIY then you're going to be at the mercy of people who tend to be costly.

Ok, I understand, thank you. I am not on here to discuss whether or not to keep the car. If it's costly then it is what it is. What I'm trying to do is get advice on how to fix the car. I never asked if I should get rid of it. My point is that I don't want to be side tracked into a pointless discussion about selling my car, which I have no intention of doing.

Did you ever get the ignition problem solved? That is a curious one to me.

Well it's kind of strange. I was driving another car for about a week and I had the battery pulled on the S-type. when I put the battery back in it started right up but it was missing because it had a bad coil, so I replaced that. Then I took it to an auto electronics shop that said there was a battery drainage issue which he resolved. For now it's fine, but none of that explains why my engine wouldn't turn off or "fuel computer error". I'm worried that problem may come back around. We will see...

I had a 3.0 jaguar first and it had a ton of issues I paid $4,000 and put $5000 into it within 5-6 months
Um at one point for a while it sounded like the engine was on but it wasn't it was the fan on trying to cool off the engine!
My fluids were super dry (do em yourself or don't trust anyone but jag sts and such suck and rip u off anyway)
I did an oil change and filled my coolant and it stopped!
I don't know if yours is actually running or the fan
... but this was my experience

Also I use to get upset people telling me to see my s ty
pe but honestly if you bought one that wasn't kept up on you truly ARE in for a nickel and diming
It may be best have a mechanic come check it out give u an idea.
Its a start!

If its major consider selling it As is and putting what u get to a well maintained s type

Good luck!
