Default 2001 S type 4.0 water pump, thermostat, intake gasket

I need to replace my water pump, thermostat, and intake gasket per the Jaguar Dealer. They want entirely too much money but I have a mechanic that may be able to repair/replace these items. Will he need special tools to do any of this? If so, what will he need. He has a reputable shop and I trust him. Thanks

If he is experienced and reputable, he will have the tools necessary for this job. You will be far better off financially at an indie shop vs. any Jaguar dealership. They will probably attempt to charge you more for these repairs than your car is now worth....

Thank you for responding...he has worked on my car before but wants to make sure he doesn't need any special tools...he doesn't typically do foreign cars...

He will need typical metric tools vs. standard SAE tools. Any qualified mechanic should already have them....

I don't have a 4.0, but no special tools needed.

As for the thermostat, shouldnt the whole t stat with housing be purchased vs just the stat itself, something about being plastic if I recall?

Also the plastic impeller water pump should be replaced with one that has a metal impeller?

Hopefully a 4.0 owner can chime in here.

Ask where the mechanic will get parts, or if he's not used to working on Jaguars, maybe you can help out by getting the parts for him.The parts can be had for a fraction of the cost of the dealer by buying online through a forum vendor , such as SNG Barrat for example, who will even give 10% off for being a forum member.

I will be buying the parts...thanks for the info...I have looked into the pricing and am aware how inexpensive they are through a vendor compared to the dealer. Again, thanks!

Just an FYI while getting work done. Do you know if the timing chain tensioners have been replaced?

The 01 with a 4.0 engine needs them done before they expire and cause catastrophic engine damage. Much info about it here on the S type forum

I pretty sure if you do timing chain tensioners you require some special tool, i would do more research on this before proceeding.

Your car is a ticking time bomb!

Do NOT do anything to it until you know the tensioners have been changed. ALL of them! The short cut method is to replace the easy to get to upper ones only. This is a mistake.

You won't have an issue you will have a destroyed engine.

I'd stop driving the car until the tensioners and water pump etc. are done.

Im not driving the car. I had my car with a jaguar service rep and he mentioned all that was wrong and did not mention the tensioners...I am getting the water pump, thermostat, and oxygen sensors replaced right now...the intake gasket is going to have to wait a couple weeks (financial reasons) before replacing...

There's no way of externally detecting bad tensioners- until it's too late. Either determine their history or park the car until you can afford to change them.

I will look into it...why would you think something was wrong with the tensioners?

Unless they have already been changed. Do you have the full service history of the car?

So few have that it is a lot safer to look. You'll be changing them!

Just a bit more background.

Jaguar has updated the tensioners 3 times before they got a system that held up. That's one of the main reasons this list recommends getting a 2003 and up S Type. 2003 was when Jaguar got it fixed (Along with a lot of other updates too) and installed the 3rd generation tensioners.

Note this is for the V-8 engines and NO 6 cylinder had this problem.
But you want to avoid the early 4.0L V-8's because of this. Now we have several guys who have changed them and it's very well documented on how to do it.

If you are paying to have it done it will be a several thousand dollar repair. This is again another reason we tell people you MUST DIY the repairs as you will go broke using the dealer.
