Hi,
Today I noticed that when I started the car and shifted to reverse, the car jerked violently. I also noticed that when I shift to park, it occasionally makes a metal banging sound. The car doesnt have a "lurch" when its moving but only when I shift to reverse. No dash lights are on or anything. Some help on this would be great. I will provide any details necessary. Thanks!

 

As you likely know, the transmissions on the early S-Types were crap. How many miles on your car? Is it a 6 or 8 cylinder?

 

You need to check the fluid level and DTCs for the gearbox. Might be as simple as low fluid??

A used 5R55N gearbox from a 2000 to 2002 MY S-Type will bolt in. (Almost the same gearbox as the Ford Exploder)

You need to make sure you get the one for your engine (3.0 or 4.0).

Has 111,700 miles and is the v6 version. I drove it recently and it seems to have subsided when I let the car idle for about a minute and then switch to reverse. Weird. Still would like some insight on this though. There was also no banging sound.

 

Not sure of your location in the world, but here goes.

Both my X200 V6 cars have had many, many trans fluid drop and refill. Not easy, but more than doable by ant standard of DIY owner.

The Black car sometimes has a "bang/clang" when going from R to P, and I have put that down to my haste to P the thing, and the engine is at a slightly higher idle than it would be if I counted 3 before pushing the lever.

When cold, I always wait for the idle to settle back to 800ish before selecting any gear.

Lots of horror stories about these Ford transmissions, but with fresh fluid regularly, they are just fine.

 

Check fuel trims in case a high idle is due to an air leak. Check them regularly in any case!
