2002 S Type exhaust leak?

Hi folks,

I recently got an S Type 3.0 gifted to me by my father. He paid $3500 for it and after rebuilding both sides of the front suspension, putting on some Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires and clearing a couple of OBD codes, the car is driving very nicely for a 10 year old Jag with almost 100k miles.

The engine sounds like it may have an exhaust leak. I think I can smell a bit of exhaust fumes in the cabin when running the heater. The engine makes a sound like if you were to purse your lips and make a car engine sound. Can't think of any other way to describe it! The sound appears to be coming from the engine compartment, not from underneath or back towards the mufflers.

Any advice on the best way to check for an exhaust leak? Any other symptoms?

Cheers,
Eamonn aka eggman

Eamonn - you can get a smoke test performed. If you believe the exhaust fumes are originating in the engine compartment the possibilities are: exhaust manifold gaskets, downpipe flange gaskets or at the worst, you could have a cracked exhaust manifold (that would be extreme)

Generally, have someone qualified do a good once over on the entire exhaust system.

Good Luck.

Maybe it could be aperished rubber hose (something that era engine is a bit prone to). Several carry engines fumes and probably smell somewhat like exhaust.

If you've an OBD tool you could read live data and look at LTFT values.

Or... have a read on here about
hose elbow
air leak
for your engine type & era (pre-2003).

Could it be more of a burnt oil smell?
See this: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ck-pics-49214/

I don't know what the noise could be up front.

Thanks for the info Gents. Car is driving OK, though fuel mileage seems lower than expected. I have an OBD tool and will get some live data readings.

Thanks again!
