Default 2003 S-Type R - No Start, Restricted Performance, CEL

Hi guys,
First off let me assure you that for the better part of a week I have been researching these issues on this forum and am now asking for help. This will be lengthy so I do apologize in advance.

The Beginning
I bought my 2003 STR with 97k miles on 1/4/2014 from a used car dealer with the assurance that the Restricted Performance and CEL would be taken care of. The dealer has been amazing and has so far foot $1,400 toward 100% of the repairs at our local Jaguar Independent Specialist Shop.

The Repairs
1 Secondary Fuel Pump Control Module
1 Fuel Pump
Spark Plugs
Labor

The Jag Shop's Diagnosis
No Vacuum Leaks
Voltage Normal after replacing fuel pump control module
A-OK to take home after the two parts were replaced

The Bad
I picked up the Jag STR last nigh and drove home. About half way there, CEL is back. About 3/4 there the Restricted Performance is back! About .5 mile later it dies with a Battery light illuminated. No restarting despite cranking. AAA tows me home.

What I've Tried
Tried connecting my OBD II reader but the fuse must be out as I am no longer getting power to the reader. I'm checking that tonight when I get home. I did try getting a new battery as the factory Jag battery tested dead at AutoZone. I purchased the Duralast Gold H8-HLG battery.

Once I get back I will post the codes if my OBD II is functioning again. In the meantime, any suggestions on where to look?

Thanks so much,
Joel S

Start by reading the warranty clause in your sales paperwork. You might be invalidating their liability if you start playing with the car.

Sounds like the battery is the culprit here...

Please excuse me as I am a bit confused. I just installed the new AutoZone battery today because a lot of folks here seem to have remedied similar situations this way. Hence why my factory battery was tested. Though it cranks better, there is still no ignition or at least not enough to start the car. I suppose I'll pull the code when I'm home and see what that says.

Also, my previous post was incomplete as to what was repaired and checked out at the shop. There is also a new o2 sensor installed and the o2 sensors and catalytic converters all checked out okay.

Thanks for all the help. As soon as I can I'll post the codes.

Default CEL Codes

So the original Jaguar battery didn't have enough power to power my OBD II port. My fuse was fine. Anyway, my codes are as follows:

1. P0171 System too lean (bank 1)
2. P0174 System too lean (bank 2)
3. P1000 undefined

Any ideas are always a great help.

Thanks!

Lots of info here on the first two codes. P1000 can be ignored for now.

Again, you bought the car with a guarantee- make this the seller's problem.

Thanks Mikey. I researched those codes last night. Seems like the Jag Shop may have missed a vacuum leak. I did some research and since this was an out of state car and needs registered in Oregon, the dealer has 60 days to make the car pass DEQ on their dime) or I get to return the car and get my money back. I will have AAA tow it back to the shop in the morning and keep you posted.

Do you have fuel pressure at the schrader valve when turning the ignition to II? Also do you hear the fuel pump priming?

Simple but have you checked the interia switch to make sure it did not get tripped somehow?

Yes. That did not fix the issue.

I believe I do. The pump primes for sure. I was out of town for work from Monday - Wednesday. The Jag Shop has had it since Monday and when I called they said they are still figuring it out. Immediately they noticed that a fuel line had popped off the right fuel pump causing it to not run if fuel got below the line.

Now they are working on finding a vacuum leak in the manifold and such. It has them stumped so far and they are the most reputable independent shop around.

The Jag Shop on 57th and Burnside. Craig is the owner and Chrysta is the assistant. Great people to deal with. Check them out at Maintenance, Repair, Jaguar, Rover, Mini, Ferrari, Exotics, Portland, Oregon .

They traced everything back to the supercharger having a leak where the TB meets it. Also, the no start was from the right hand fuel pump line being disconnected by accident. So we were relying on gravity when the line was submerged to get fuel.

Total repair cost for the dealer $2200. They did the right thing and paid for everything.

Thanks everyone for the help. I will drive until Tuesday. If no codes are thrown then to DEQ she goes.

Update time. She passed DEQ with flying colors! Let's hope that this is it for a while. Really, thanks again.
