Default 2003 STR - how low is too low?

My new to me STR seems to be riding on the bump stops. Looks cool yes, also rides like crap. I'm convinced the front shocks a long blown out.

So - Anyone seen this before? I haven't looked to see if they are cut or aftermarket (but I wouldn't think aftermarket springs would ride on the bump stops).

Anyone have a set of STR shocks (CATS) and springs for sale?

- And yes, fixing the paint is next after the suspension

Shocks don't control ride height- springs do.

Kendal

mikey's right!!
also
that looks no lower than any other STR on H&R lowered springs .
plenty of photos in the forum to back me up . in fact just google STR H&R .

ill bet the cats suspension (if fitted) is on the blink .
the default setting for cats shocks with the control module disconnected or faulty is rock solid , hard as a board . as described .

so check there is no water in the boot/trunk and make sure the module is plugged in . module is at the left rear of spare wheel bay.

ill swap my stock springs for H&R but only for H&R . but ill bet thats not the issue here .
your car looks good buy the way.. so does yours Rodney

Springs hold it up, shocks control the motion.

Thanks all - I'm aware the springs hold the car up. But I'm quite sure my front shock have been bouncing on the bump stops and hammered themselves to bits. I took a peek under the front and the whole shock assy is black with shock oil / grime.

I've noticed that just pushing on the fenders gives no bounce - this thing is slammed on the bump stops. I'm assuming the CATS system just goes from soft to firm (but not solid) when moving and with key off its back to soft.

Anyway, looks like i have a lead on some shocks (thanks abonano!) so things are moving along.

thanks again
Kendall

PS - Rodney, thats a nice color! Is that a STR without a sunroof? That would be a rare bird over here.

I actually havent seen a STR in south africa with a sun roof.
Mine is a metallic british racing green 2005 model with touchscreen (which is rare..most only have the dual lcd screens) black and aluminium interior..50k miles , immaculate ..cost me $11 000. I bought it a month ago..had a 03 STR that got written off..ubered for a year till I found this one .. much better than Ubering
I do very little mileage , maybe 250 miles a month..tho I did a road trip of a 1000miles when I bought it to get it home.

Back from the dead. I was able to get a set of shocks & springs from a forum member, but now almost a year later I go to put them on and they are different. The rears look like they will work but the front lower mount is different. Shocks on the car have 2 "ears" that attach to the control arm. Shocks I bought just have a bushing. I of course did not look at what mine were before I bought them.

So - anyone know the difference in front shocks across the years? Maybe I bought an earlier shock when I needed a later one? Anyone have a set of front shocks for sale (with the ears)?

The good news is that I found my car did have a set of H & R springs on it, so thats why it was low.

thanks!

The on-line official jaguar classic parts web site will help you with any changes in the shocks over the years. Just look up the part and you will find any vin number changes:

The STR shocks are different to the others in the range, there was also a part number change on the STR shocks at VIN M45255 (2002.5 model year) and another at N52458 (06 model year)

Here is a link so you can look the part numbers up yourself:
