Default 2004 S-Type gearbox

I have an 04 S-Type that I bought, not running, for a restoration project. It's showing a code for 'Gearbox Fault' and the shift selector is loose. Just moves around like a broken linkage. I've checked the linkage at both ends and it appears to be intact, but the car will not shirt from park. I've read that it's not the transmission, but stuck on what it could be. I'm doing all the work myself and would like to keep it out of the dealership if possible. Any advice as to what the issue is and how to correct it would be great. I honestly don't know much about English auto brands. The car is running now, but the gearbox issue is keeping it from driving.

Have corrected the sloopy movement in the shifter. Will now change gears, but still getting gearbox fault and car will not move.

You are going to need a diagnostic code reader that can properly access Jaguar proprietary chassis codes. A "gearbox fault" covers a good bit of territory and specifics are needed. Also, did you check the gearbox for the proper ATF level?

Can you please elaborate how you corrected the sloppy movement issue? This might give us a clue for the bigger picture, especially if it was/is related to the other problems.

At the base of the shift lever, do the individual indicators (P, N, D, etc) illuminate for each position selected? IIRC, that’s actually feedback from the transmission control module. If good, this means the shift lever is moving the cable which is moving the transmission innards, even if nothing else is happening.

When shifted to R or D, do you feel any change, as if the transmission is trying to move the car but can’t? For example, maybe you notice a slight drop in engine RPM. Or is there nothing at all, as if you hadn’t even touched the shifter?

Good idea from Karl to check the display (P, N, D, etc). If that is OK:
As S-Type owner suggests: "...did you check the gearbox for the proper ATF level?"

Because, if there is no or very little ATF (automatic transmission fluid) in the transmission, it will not "transmit" anything, i.e. no gear would engage.

My thread might then be of help:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...s-type-264102/

Do full ATF flush. Use only ATF Lifeguard 6 (or 1 or 2 others as in thread). change ATF sump (=filter) and the sleeve above (seal of the connector).
