Statement of the obvious: get the replacement before starting a strip-down

 

So then my 15 minute timeline was only 5 minutes off. Hey great!!!

 

Just a word of caution for the ham fisted/careless amongst us (me) - I have yet to do this job on the STR, but when I did it on my X type the first time, I sliced my freaking hand on the cowl cover when prying it off. That plastic can be pretty sharp, it was like a large paper cut. Not sure if the S Type is the same or not but just something to keep in mind if so.

But this might be just me, I'm known for finding new and interesting ways of inflicting self-injury.

 

Good suggestions. Also- if your jag has been in the sun/heat for several years, the cowl cover may have become a little brittle. Use caution when lifting up the corner to access the cabin air filter. A local shop here, Autoscope, broke my cowl cover when they carlessly lifted it up really high. Also, make certain you install the cabin air filter the correct direction. There is an 'AIR FLOW' indicator on it. Autoscope also couldn't quite get that right.

 

Well I thought that since it only took a few minutes I'd take a look and button it back up. Now that it's all apart I'll just drive my truck until I get the filter!


It took me at least 10 minutes to figure out the push/pull pin things! I had no idea how they came off! Thanks for the write-up!

 

Napa ordered a filter from another store and it will be here in the morning, it was only $20.

 

I ordered mine from NAPA yesterday here in Canada same part was $58 !!!!! That really p!sses me off

 

OReilly had mine (to order) for $27

Just wondering if anyone knows where the cut of in the vin for the change in air filters for an '05. Want to change mine but not sure how? Car is in a Garage till the snow is gone otherwise I'd check myself. Plus I need ten posts to see the pics posted above.

I have found two types of cabin filters. The better one has the addition of activated charcoal to help with the odors. These are good bit more expensive and harder to find.


I recommend removing the cowl cover completely. As was posted earlier shop's try to rush the job by only partially removing the cowl cover and then prying it up to slip the old filter out and slide the new filter in. Bad idea! I find lots of junk in and around the filter area. So when I change them I use my shop vac to clean out the entire cowl area.

If anyone needs new push pins they are available at any Ford dealership as the Lincoln LS uses them too. Sorry I don't have a part number. You can find a 1/4" push-in nylon rivet at Lowes that works too. Part #H-881207. Just remember to push in the center button to remove. Don't pry them out something will break!

Changed it yesterday, WOW what a difference!

 

I pulled mine out tonight. I think it was put in around the dawn of time. I found them available, at least in my area, at WallyMart for $18.94.

I only had to undo a few clips and 2 screws to get mine out. However, I dropped a screw and it fell down behind the passenger side headlight. I ended up having to take the bumper halfway off and remove the headlight toget the screw back. I need to get a magnetic tray to hold stray screws.

 

Just changed the air filter in my 2005 S Type. Pushed down on center of plastic hold pins, pulled them out, lifted up on cowl, removed and replaced filter. No torx screws. It was fairly clean and had ben replaced with a Micron filter labeled with the Ford logo. My replacement filter was identical except the Ford logo was blacked out.

 

I got my latest one from Olympus Auto Parts for $18.50. It was one of the activated charcoal ones. I need to start writing down when I replace filters because the one I removed was pretty nasty. I did the job in the parking lot in about 5 minutes. It was on my lunch hour at work, so no beer.
