Talking 2005 STR Brake Job

Please chime in if you have experience (good or bad) with Centric rotors

Here's the break pad and rotor history of my 2005 Jaguar STR with almost 100K miles.

PADS
I purchased an 05 STR with 7K miles and at 22K miles the front & rear OEM pads were swapped with Akebono pads. Original OEM rotors were not touched and were kept on the vehicle.

Break Pad Part Numbers
(Front) Eur938
(Rear) Eur592

On my car, the OEM rear pads made too much noise, front pads made a lot of break dust and were difficult to break smoothly (...kinda' grabby). My personal findings comparing OEM to Akebono pads...
  • reduced break dust
  • easy to break smoothly in day-to-day use
  • durable pads without prematurely wearing the rotors

Update: My vehicle now has 96789 miles and today I replaced the pads again with another complete set of Akebono pads (Tire Rack = $183). They likely should have been changed at or around 92K miles for best performance.

ROTORS
Rotor Part Number Centric 120.20018 Front Brake Rotor

(Front) Using Centic rotors (Amazon Prime = $150)
OEM (worn) = 25.0 lbs.
Centric (new) = 25.2 lbs.
(Rear) Continuing use of original OEM rear rotors since they still do not show excessive wear.

Summary
  • Getting 70K+ miles on pads (front and rear) is phenomenal!
  • Getting almost 100K miles with OEM rotors is also phenomenal!

Default 05 STR Brembo vs. Centric rotors (opinions)

Update:
My STR has been driven over 500 miles since the brake job and I have not noticed any difference between the OEM 'Brembo' rotors and the 'Centric' rotors. More time will tell how they perform in terms of rotor vs. pad wear.

Opinion/Guess:
If I drove this vehicle for another 90K miles, I'd likely find the OEM Brembo rotors will come out on top in terms of performance.

Feel free to chime in with your personal experience with Centric vs. OEM ...or any other rotor brand vs. OEM.

To be very honest, I've never noticed any difference with any rotor vs. another on any vehicle. Pads, yes there's a huge difference but rotors, no.

Other rotors may not last as long but you won't know for a year or three. If they were cheap enough you'll save money but only if you DIY.

From my personal experience very inexpensive rotors are made from impure cast iron and rust sooner and rust more than quality rotors. (Again, these are the very cheap rotors; not the higher quality/cost rotors that retailers sell). A good amount of the rotors with low quality cast iron seem to be imported from China.

Why some rotors rust more than others, plus a lot of other good info...(Click Here)

I use R1 Concept slotted rotors on 2005 STR. I like the black zinc coating which DOES last. I was surprised it did too.

I don't see the front rotor's anymore but they use to list them? Oops I do see them but only with the silver zinc finish.

Centric are Premium High-Carbon Rotor's, without the name brand mark-up.
My Father has used Centric for all our family's auto's for almost 10 years, He owns both a 03(purchased in 04) and 06(purchased in 08) Ford SUV's that OEM rotors would warp after getting them turned or repeated heavy braking,, the high carbon content can take abuse without warping. While Brembo, EBC and others, make great rotors, at 3 or more times the price of Centric, which work just as well as the Brand name at a huge cost savings
For DIY'ers truly best performance for your buck.

As for Pads that I Agree the Akebono are super quite, and almost no brake dust.
mine are for a 4.2l non 'R' model
Akebono EUR1065 EURO Ultra-Premium Ceramic Front Brake Pad Set For 2003-2005 Jaguar S-Type
Akebono EUR806 EURO Ultra-Premium Ceramic Rear Brake Pad Set
Ultra-Quiet - controls noise, vibration and harshness level
European braking performance with enhanced pedal feel
Extremely rotor friendly for longer rotor life
Friction formulas specially designed for European vehicles
I found on my 04 4.2l with OEM pads I used to have to scrub dust off my front rims every other wash, now even the backside of rims stays clean, they are pricey but well worth it.
