2005 STR - My Luck On This One...
Ok, my 2005 STR is 9 days away from turning in. (It's a lease) It's always run fine, not a single problem. Yet last week I notice transmission fluid on my driveway in fairly decent amounts as I backed the car out.
I took a look online to find it's a sealed unit right? So I'm wondering what I should do? No warning lights on the dash, and shifting seems fine. Is there something I can climb under the car and look for?
The nearest Jag dealership is 160 miles away, so is there something I can look for to see if this is serious? I' assuming if I turn the car into the leasing company without fixing the problem, they'll charge ma an arm and leg right?

Maybe the trans sleeve. Check these out. What color is the fluid? There is also a coolant line that leaks back there that it could be. If its coolant its more then likely the coolant line under the supercharger. If its trans fluid if you go to the S type forum search that forum for transmission sleeve.

Thanks for the reply. I went out this morning to have a look and the puddle is fairly large under the car. It's a clear liquid with a brownish tint. I rubbed my finger on the ground to get a feel for it. Very light consistency, and clear looking on the fingers. (Again with a very slight brownish tint)
There's enough on the ground to where I'm worried if I should drive it at all? When I backed it out of the driveway to see if any warnings would fire up on the dash, or if the shifting would hunt, it seemed fine.
Not sure what to do from here? Thanks!

Brownish fluid is the trans. If it was coolant then it would be red or pinkish. Most likely you have a leaking sleeve and that link shows what has to be done to fix it. Now its just a matter of what you want to do to move forward. If you have a warranty they should cover that as the sleeve is essentially defective. If not its gonna be leaking like that till its fixed and the only way you can even fill it is by getting under there and getting the trans to the proper temp and fill. But its just gonna leak out again. Its only a matter of time which if your losing at that rate probably very very soon that you will go into restricted performance and most likely not be able to move since the trans needs the fluid to actually make the car move. If its at your house I wouldn't move it. Dont want it stuck on the side of the road. How handy are you? Where are you located?
Thanks.
I'm located near St. Louis. Only able to find one dealership near here, and they're closing shop, and unable to see the car prior to my turn in date.
With a lease, is this something that is my responsibility to repair, or is this normally something they fix? Thanks. Sorry for the newbie questions!

I wish I could help you with the lease question but I have never leased a car, I always purchase cause I drive too many miles. You would have to look over you lease paperwork. Do you know if you have a warranty? What is your mileage at? You can try and find an independent shop that has ZF trans experience. Audis use ZF's so they would know the filling procedure about about the fluid. Not sure but maybe a Ford dealership. They use ZF in a few of there cars also. They may even know about the sleeve issue since a few of there vehicles use the ZF26. Worth a try to call. Maybe contact the leasing company also maybe they can recommend somethimg tell them the situation and how you are having trouble finding a suitable repair shop but you want to get it repaired before turning it in to them.
Ok, got under the STR today after I picked up a jack, and it appears the fluid is all coming from the pan/rubber plug area? It looks as if I replace this, the problem will be solved. Any advice on where to get this?

Is there any way you can get a pic of what you are talking about? The sleeve is a plug. Its what seals the connection to the plug. This is the plug that will leak which is the sleeve that you would need. Are these the areas its coming from or is it coming from somewhere else?

Try to find this plug and see if its leaking from there. If so you need to get that replaced as per the post I posted above. Here is another pic of it. Its rotated so if you turn your head to the right where the left side is the bottom thats the plug. This one is not leaking but you should see fluid seeping from the connection.
