#1 helps a little with airflow under the vehicle
#2 if you have a slight leak somewhere it will keep the stuff off your floor

As Kazsam wrote, air flow. Don't remove it and leave it off. It is of some importance.

I'm surprised they don't have a flap in them for accessing the oil pan and filter. BMWs do. Go figure.

If it were me, I'd leave it on, but it's not totally necessary.
