2008 4.2 Stype Alternator Bearings
My alternator has started to whine, charging fine. I see lots of YouTube videos on changing out bearings. Has anyone done it on their Stype?
I found a repair kit including bearings, brush holder, brushes and rectifier for $57.00 US on line at Alternator and Starter Parts Wholesale. Of course with shipping and exchange it will cost $137.00 Canadian by the time it is here in 4 or 5 days. I will follow up with a repair progress report when I get into it.
I had the factory Denso alternator in my wife's 2006 XK8 (the same 4.2 engine) completely refurbished last July by a local alternator/starter repair shop. All the new parts were Denso. Well worth the $125 I spent on the project....
The 2008 4.2 takes a different alternator then 2005 and earlier and all I find on line for me in Canada are Denso rebuilds at $499.00. The rebuild kid arrived yesterday, so I will get into it this week.
Does the kit include a new control module or regulator, or whatever you want to call it? No personal experience, but if you replace this internal module, supposedly most aftermarket units won't communicate properly with the car. The end result is an alternator that charges just fine, but won't turn off the little battery symbol on the dash. The workaround has been to keep the existing module.
