Default 204 s-type trans problem. Is it the same problem?

Hi all,

Had to have my wife's 04 S-type towed home today. The shifter is stuck in the Park position but the trans indicator shows Neutral. If I take off the park brake it is definitely in neutral.
The shifter won't budge.

I have looked through the forum and see that it's not uncommon for a couple of linkage bolts on the trans to loosen off or fall out but that was on earlier models.
Might this be the same deal for our 04?

If it is the issue, do I have to remove the whole central console to get to those two bolts or can I get to them from under the car?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Ken

The shift cable needs to be checked and/or adjusted from beneath the car. There are shifter bolts under shifter that can become loose. Just remove cover under shifter handle. There was a recent post/thread on this issue. Check through June's list of threads.

Does the 04 have a similar issue to the 03 and earlier though?

I vaguely remember that the trans was changed for 04. Hopefully it IS the same problem as I don't relish giving the dealer or a shop the opportunity to tell me "you need a new transmission".

If it were a linkage problem, it seems weird that the shifter would refuse to come out of the park position (as if the interlock were on) but yet the trans be in neutral. I would think the shifter would just move freely without engaging any gears?

As far as removing the console or the shift cover, how is it attached? I am at work so can't see it at the moment but I don't remember any obvious fasteners.

Thanks.

The trans was changed for the 2003 model and has been the same since. The earlier problems I believe were related to the parking pin...The newer cars have issues with the linkage bolts.. Also, the shifter plate is held in with clips.

An easy way to get the instructions to pull apart the console is to get the installation instructions for the ACM or Sat Radio accessories and read them over.. They can easily be found here... http://www.ownerinfo.jaguar.com/extf...prod/index.jsp

Thanks all.
I'll get under the car this weekend.
Fingers crossed for loose and missing bolts!

As you all predicted, one loose bolt and the other completely out and jammed between the linkage and the heat shield. replaced them with loctite and all is well.

Looks like it wasn't the first time this has happened since the two bolts were different. We bought the car used, so it would've happened on the previous owners watch.

Thanks again for the information!
