3.0 V6 Vacuum Leak - IMT O-Rings?
Hello all,
Are there any audible symptoms for IMT O-RING Failure?
So engine (idle) with bonnet opened we hear the following...
If we repeatedly blip the throttle - a loud and very quick "suck" noise from the air-intake area is heard prior to RPM increase - pressure not balanced?
When engine is shut-off a 3-4 second a "hiss" followed by a sharp "squeak" is heard from the intake manifold area.
IMT O-Ring failure or is there a larger gasket we've over-looked?

p.s. This issue was noticed after replacing a leaking coolant tank and checking engine with the bonnet open - we're not sure how long engine has been doing this or whether it's thanks to correcting the leaking coolant tank.

There will be oil on the paper towel and you can see burnt oil on the exhaust manifold cover. Also sometimes you smell burnt oil in the cabin.

It's not the usual hose that fails at the elbow? (Under the manifold.) Isn't there another hose towards the engine rear that can also fail?
What are the fuel trims like? First things to check to rule in/out air leaks.

Here is a link that will help you identify all vacuum lines, PLUS note the link to Gus's site for the elbow located under the lower intake manifold, its a known issue!

We did notice oil on the exhaust manifold, passenger side. Haven't checked driver's side yet. The IMT Valves appear to be above the driver's side of the engine intake - if they drip?
Does the coolant have to be drained to remove intake?
Part numbers required?

Thanks I did have a flick through that last week, noticed repair was on a 2005MY though ??
The breather hose XR84 5730 - can this be heard "hissing" i.e. is it exposed externally or sealed within the crankcase??

Hissing definitely coming from rearward of intake manifold - there are lots of hoses behind there...

Sorry that last image,
(purge valve rear of intake??) is 90 deg connector which is totally "sucked" of any internal air, there is a vacuum inside, the bend cannot be squeezed...does this seem right - connected to the problem hose?

Leonard, really we can go around and around here, so I am just going to come out and say it. Most likely the elbow under the lower intake needs replaced, I would rerplace it along with all the intake seals, plenum seals and vacuum lines, IMT O-rings. This should cost around $200.00 (US), sorry I am not into doing the conversion. If you can DIY it will take about 6~8 hours for the first timer....
Heed my advise and do it, then you can get along enjoying your vehicle!

Removed windscreen cowl and cross brace to thoroughly check behind intake manifold.
What I discovered, if done deliberately, is a DISGRACE. Someone (dodgy garage) has sabotaged this hose – see angled filing marks exposing internal tubing.
No small creature took fancy for its lunch and I don’t sleep-walk. It’s taken me weeks to discover this abomination.
What is the part, its importance and difficulty to replace?
The hose leaves rear of intake and divides – one tube travels to unit on PSide wheel arch, the other red inner-tube (sabotaged!) travels 6 inches to a fuel pressure regulator, if JTIS is correct.
p.s. JTIS method for 2000MY intake manifold removal seems incorrect, it displays several engine components my vehicle just doesn’t have, for example the EGR valve isn’t there!!

You've done well to find that. Usually we're looking for a part that has failed for "natural" causes.
Maybe JEPC (the parts stuff) or an online parts site might help but equally someone may know the earlyish 3.0 well enough (not me, sorry).

I'm guessin' that's a UK model without EGR like we have here in the States. That would mean the vacuum harness has one large elbow at the rear of the induction manifold, two hoses off that elbow, one going to the Injection Pressure Sensor, and one going off the engine to the LH side of the engine compartment to the Evap/Purge assembly; all in a corrugated wrap. Best I can tell that's part number XR811833. You might check along the length of that vacuum harness and see if there are any tags with weird numbers on them, something in a format similar to 4X83-14C293-AB. If you can find a number like that, the spares guy can likely use it to confirm the service part number.

Correct, I couldn't locate an EGR Valve!
Fortunately we're able to visit main dealerships and scan through diagrams there, so i'm confident the part will be identified.
Why would a mechanic want to damage this part? Shameful.

Looking at the damage to the elbow I am not sure that you did not have a squirrel looking for a treat. Squirrels will eat the strangest things in the utility business we found they like aluminum wire. Another reason not to leave your car parked for an extended period of time.
