Default 4.2 S Type R chain tensioner

Early 4.2. Were the later tensioners fitted ? Or do they need checking ?

How early? Engine date?

Almost all, perhaps all, use the later kind - but if you have a pre-production car....

Not sure of engine number. It's a 2002 registered. It's got a noise on start up. Haven't looked at it yet. Will try to getc the engine number.
is the engine number a definitive answer?
thanks for reply

Well really it's the date on the engine, which can be a long time before reg date (e.g. my car was built months before, and engine earlier still).

If the VIN is well after M45255 you've a fair chance.

All 4.2L NA and SC come from the factory with the latest tensioner's.

It's very rare to have any tensioner problems with these later V-8's.

Are you sure that is the noise?
I would remove some belts and start the engine because you will spend a ton of money changing them.

knick on start up. Big end or main bearing goes with oil pressure. Not good
