Yes I would disconnect the battery - just to be safe.

This is off Topix
Deactivation Procedure
WARNING:To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components. To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait for one minute. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable, refer to Section 414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.
  1. Wait one minute for the backup power supply in the air bag electronic crash sensor (ECS) module to deplete its stored energy.
As for the battery - yes it can be faulty. Usually you will get a code B1676 logged in multiple modules which states battery voltage below threshold. If you have this code, test the battery. As a rule of thumb, its always good to have the battery tested anytime you have electrical fault, easy and usually free to do if you don't have a tester yourself. Depending on climate and environment, you should get several years. Not sure what its like in Atlanta, but in Texas, we're lucky to get 4 years, anything past that they should be in Guinness Book. Here in New Zealand where I am now, most Jaguars and Land Rovers are getting get around 6-7 years out of the original battery, the humidity level here is not as high as it is in Houston.
