Default Alarm Issue

Hi I hope I'm in the right area to ask this ... if not apologies !

I have just bought a 2001 S type 3ltr SE Auto loads of miles but drives gorgeous.

The key fob does not work so I have to open it manualy with a key ... each time I do so the alarm goes off and I have to quickly jump in it and start her up so the alarm stops.

Have you any ideas how to reset the system ? Or is it as simple as "you need to unlock it with the key fob" ? If so is it as easy as getting a new battery or would I have to get this done by a main agent?

Thanks in advance for your help?

Tracey Ann

It may just be the battery in the fob, there are also sometimes problems with the buttons.
Did you only get the one fob with the car?

The alarm is set up like that, so the fob's not working but the rest is. Alarm will stop with key in, I'm fairly sure you don't have to start the car.

You should have got 2 full keys and quite likely also a valet key.

Hi thanks for replying

There is only one fob and one key . No spares . When you unlock the door with the key and open the door after about 3 seconds the alarm starts . I put the key in the ignition the alarm still continues and will not stop until the ignition is turned and the engine started. I also tried it opening the rear drivers side door and it did the same thing .

Then you will probably be best to get another key and two new fobs and have them programmed.

This is normally a dealer only procedure and can be pricey.

Some people have found specialised locksmiths who can do it, key blanks and fobs can be found on ebay.

You must have all keys and fobs programmed at the same time. (existing key will need done with the new ones)

If you were to lose your only key you would have major problems.

So you think it's definitely a fob issue and not an alarm fault ?

I'd say so, what does the red light in the centre of the dash do when the car is locked and when you start it?
Don't rush into anything just yet there will be some more folks along to share their thoughts.

OK, so the exact details are not like my car (I don't have to start the engine) but then mine's after the redesign and this one isn't. For peace of mind you want 2 keys and only a dealer or specialist locksmith can program them. All other (lost) keys are deleted during that so at least you end up knowing only you can start the car.

It sounds exactly like a fob problem to me.

when i open my car with my key i have a set amount of time to put the key in the ignition and turn it to deactivate the alarm without it sounding, the is a quiet beeping untill i put the key in the ignition, like the lights on warning.

the alarm does not sound, unless another door is opened, before i deactivate it via ignition.

i have just tested this.

Hi yes I get the "warning" beeps and I have to jump in quickly stick the key in and start it up and it doesnt go off .

BUT when I don't hear the warning beeps and no other doors are open the alarm goes off within about 3 seconds loudly !!!!!!!!! and doesn't shut up until I start her up.

I have started leaving it unlocked when I am in the supermarket as I cannot open any of the doors without the alarm going off so have to leave it running when Im putting the shopping in the boot .. its bloody annoying !

you should not have to start the car, just turn ignition till the dash warning lights come on.

Just want to add what others have said. Don't delay in getting another key and fob. EBay has them but like always do some research so you buy the right one.
