Default Alternator: Pre-need research

The OEM alternator for my 04 S-type is close to $1,000. I have read on this forum that people have bought much cheaper units that fit, but don't talk to the PCM, leaving the red light on the dash on all the time. I have been unable to find a source for an aftermarket unit that will talk to the PCM. I have been able to find a source for all the rebuild parts except the regulator (Maniacelectricmotors.com). Has anyone found a source for reman alternators that will work seamlessly? I know it is strange to work on these problems pre-need, but I did it for my TPS and eventually found a source, which I have reported here. I keep my cars forever, so I know I will need an alternator eventually. My wife loves her S-type!

+1 John!

My daughter ran a $125 or so AutoZone (lifetime warranty) unit for nearly two years with the red BATT light. No big deal when she was in high school 5 mi down the road and the car was stabled here. Shortly after she started college, a 6 hr drive, I replaced it with one I got from a breaker for $80. I boxed and labeled the AutoZone unit and put it on the shelf for next time an alternator craps out on one of the S'Types - it will charge just fine while I have an electric shop mend the OEM one...

Thanks for the replies, guys. Taking your advice, I found an exact match used one on eBay and ordered it. I'll get it rebuilt and keep it until I need it.
The used unit is less than one hour of labor at the Jag dealer.
