For the 2nd time this month, I've overheard folks talking about people that drive jaguars. It's the NUTTIEST thing I've ever heard.
The first was last week when I pulled up I'm my s type-- silver 2007, mind you. Nice little simple car. I get out and see two 20-something's look at me, and then one says to the other, "probably a drug dealer or something..." I thought they were crazy and went on my way. Then, JUST TODAY I'm driving around in the same jag, get out if the car and a lady next to me in the grocery store parking lot says, "nice car, but we don't want any trouble."
?!?!?! WHAT?! I'm the nicest guy. Look like your average 40-something. Minding my own business. My silver s type us just a normal s-type! Not souped up, nothing fancy, no bling-- just a regular silver jag.
I was talking to some friends today and they too, said that people who drive jags are RICH and are known for being "in the mob." ?!?!? Are they SERIOUS?? That is the most IDIOTIC thing I've ever heard!
Where does this "bad boy" reputation come from with jaguars?? My other jag is a 2003 super v8-- if they would've seen me climb outta THAT I would've had the cops called on me FOR SURE!!
Is it TV that's giving this image of sketchiness? Hollywood? Am I just living in a strange place? (Utah-- gotta be it!) or is this a normal reaction for others?? It's mostly the 20-something's I hear this from......your thoughts??

Lol I use to get that in my x-type but I was 22 in what looked like a brand new jag.(young black kid) I got pulled over so much for bs. Then I bought a gto never once had any problems. Now in my 2005 str I got pulled over the day I switched rims that's it. I get tons of compliments on the car from all different types of people. Parked next to my buddies 2012 m3 at the track, people were interested in my car i was surprised. These cars are just so rare around here, I've literally seen one other 2005+ str in my life probably in 2007 or 08 and went absolutely nuts and actually followed the guy to look at the car.

I was dead set on getting rid of it, then I let my buddy drive my car, while I drove my winter car home and feel in love again. I couldn't believe how many people were looking at the car. Also how good it looked it motion.

Utah? No more needs to be said! I wonder what the reaction would be if you took the car to somewhere that had made it out of the 19th century?

The image of S Type Jag drivers here in the UK is that they are old farts with more money than sense. Can't disagree with the old too much, but wish the rest was true.

Sadly around here the price of the very early s-type v6s have gotten so low with high mileage that you see them being driven around all chromed out in the hood. So maybe that trend will start here of bad people driving them? lol..

Had a good laugh with this thread. When I was (a lot) younger and owned an XK-150S, there was nothing but admiring looks and comments, together with a constant and realizeable potential for getting lucky.
These days, it's a little different. Some admiring looks and comments, other looks and comments not quite so admiring, not much potential...
Now I'm going to be thinking about the OP 's words. These days the outlook ain't what it used to be.

Just out of vulgar curiosity, what is the impression, among folks in the UK, of drivers of X350 saloons?

Even older farts
When buying a car I don't give any thought at all to what others may think of my age or monetary worth. I buy what I like (using a list of features) and can afford.

Me too. I drive what I like and what I'm willing to afford. My friends think I drive old man cars, but then they're always the ones wanting to drive with me and the jag whenever we go places! ;-)

With the price of older, base model S-Types getting under $5K, anybody can find themselves in a Jag these days. I've seen a few around town sporting loud paint jobs, boom-box stereos and 22" wheels. Yup.

Haha, just the other day I stopped at a fast food joint, put the car (2005 Jaguar S-Type V8) in park and sent a few emails as I was waiting for family and seen a man just staring at me or the car for quite some time and I stared back as well...I got out the car and you should of seen the face on the guy once he seen me ! Probably because I'm Latino and 20 years old ?

Aussies are much less judgemental. I get the occasional nod from the younger blokes which is a way of showing approval. Even get the occasional "nice car" while filling up or in the car park...
Only my wife thinks it looks like a drug dealers car!!!!
Cheers,
