blue smoke
Hi,
I have a question relating to the above subject,
My car (3ltr S Type 2003 model with 76K miles) blows a puff a blue smoke when I start it after it being stood a few days.
I have had a small external engine oil leak for some years but it is manageable and does not need extra oil between oil changes 8K
The car performs well with no running issues.
What is the cause or causes?

ps went to a independent jag garage about the oil leak and he said "find the leak and he can seal it externally" that's easier said than done!

Usually when an engine produces a small amount of blue smoke on initial start-up, it's because there is wear on the oil control ring of one of the pistons or a faulty inlet valve seal.
To determine the cylinder causing the condition, remove the spark plugs and see if there is any oil-fouling on the tip, which appears as brownish deposits caked near the centre electrode on the insulator.
You may want to also consider finding another Jaguar specialist to work on your car.

Thanks NBCat I will do the spark plug check when time is available (have a Volvo XC60 so no pressure on sorting the Jag but a lot of pressure on other jobs not car related)
When I started it yesterday the "blue smoke, if I remember correctly, showed only on the passenger side (left side exhaust looking from the rear of the car (UK))
It's a pity it didn't show itself when I changed the plugs 7k ago
I cannot remember which bank that is but it will narrow the check.
Are the above issues difficult to resolve for a moderate diy'er?

The nearside is Bank2; the offside is Bank1.

Depending on your level of skill with turning spanners, it may be possible. If the cause is an oil control ring, that would require removing the engine for an overhaul.
