Body Tags
Hey all, new here. I have a question that is a little hard to search for because of terminology.
I'm very well versed in XJ's of the past currently with an '87 XJ6 and a '95 XJR and I'm looking at an '06 STR, low miles, charcoal with a Dove interior, at a dealer.
I'm concerned though because there are no body tags on the doors, hood or trunk like there are on my '87 and '95, that show the VIN. This is great on my older cars because you can prove there has been no panel replacement. I don't want to buy a car that has been painted (the CARFAX shows nothing in body work. The car really is cherry otherwise!)
On the lot there was a new '08 S-type with all the tags in place. There was a used '03 without the tags and a used '07 WITH the tags. Would you guys please let me know if your cars (especially those with '06's) have tags on all the panels? Also the hood blanket is torn like it was removed for some reason.
Being new to S-Types, maybe I'm worried for no reason, but I thought I'd ask anyway just to save me a trip to a body shop before purchasing.
Thanks!

RE: Body Tags
Nah, they're on the back of the doors (the end where the latch is) and on the bottom side of the hood and trunk lid showing the vin. On the cars that had them they also had them on each of the front fender flanges (where they attach to the inner apron) near the nose of the car. Maybe that car doesn't have them either.
I'm just thinking these might have been removed if the car was painted. *IF* the car has been painted, they did an awesome job- which is leading me to thinking these cars don't often have these coded tags.
There are enough of these STRs in the used market that I don't need to buy one that has been wrecked. I just like the color of this one.
Thanks again for any info!

RE: Body Tags
The picture that mohrd posted is showing the factory VIN tag on the a-post next to the dash, the black and white label on the blue painted portion. That is the normal position for the main body VIN tag. I've seen agressive washing and chemicals wash the lettering off but the tag is usually there. You may be refering to the optional extra VIN tags installed by some dealers on some cars. When the car was new there would have been an optional VIN tag kit that the dealer would have installed at additional cost that includes tags on each body panel. Some dealers put them on as general principle just to get the extra $50 or so in profit, works the same for wheel locks, some dealers put them on all cars and hope you don't notice the additional charge in the paperwork.
