Default Brake lights on. Will not shift out of park

Hello again, My wife drove the 2000 S type 3.0 (131,000k) to the store and called saying it will not go out of park. When I arrived the brake lights are stuck on. ( all three )
I pulled the center console and made sure nothing looked broken or out of place. I went under the car to make sure the linkage bolts are not loose or missing. Can the stoplight switch on the pedal be at fault? Wouldn't the brake lights being always on tell the car its ok to shift into drive or reverse?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Unhappy brake lights on but transmission working now.

We rocked the car on the flat surface and finally got it in gear. The brake lights are still on unless I unplug the parking brake switch on the pedal. Found one new part but the plunger was stuck out. Does anyone know if the plunger should move freely in and out. If so I need to order another that is not defective.
Thanks

Smile How I fixed it

Repair update: Even though the car was not on a hill and never had a issue, just rock the car and then it should go into gear. Do not for the shift lever because its plastic.

Brake lights on always: I removed the lower switch on the brake pedal. To remove just twist gently and it pulls out. Then unplug. The plunger would not go out far enough to engage. I gently turned the black dial on the end of the switch and pulled the plunger out a little. Added some light cable grease and replaced. Works like a charm but I am still ordering the switch for $20.00.

Hi Jag, are you considering upgrading the plastic piece in the gear shifter to a metal one? Mine is a little sticky from P to R sometimes, however I do use my handbrake whenever parking. I am sure it will give up eventually so I intend to order the metal piece soon.

Default Plastic trans part.

To be honest I am not sure exactly which piece you mean. I had the console off and there are a lot of plastic pieces. Do you mean the one on the right which goes to the metal cable that leads to the transmission? And one good thing came out of this mess. My wife says she refuses to drive the jaguar anymore after this issue. I am using the parking brake now but the car is acting just like normal as if nothing happened. I have put 50k on the car in the last two years and except for normal issues it is great. How many 3.0 v-6 engines can brag that they hold 6.75 quarts of oil, give 240 horsepower, and do it so smooth. I can only imagine what the v-8 super feels like to drive.

Jag, yes the the one that the cable attaches to is correct. i believe most of the issues people have with shifting our of park comes from that plastic piece failing. There are a ton of aftermarket suppliers that make a metal piece that replaces the plastic.

From the Jag TSB, the issue is parking with the weight of the car on the trans pawl instead of applying the handbrake first. Then the plastic part can break but think before using a metal one what will break instead. Jag say to apply the handbrake to avoid the problem...
