Question Engine light after engine light Wow!!

i have a 2000 S-Type V8 Supercharged that has given me a lot of problems but I love it so much. Its like when your kid is a juvenile delinquent but you still love him in spite of it.

2 weeks ago I had my dealer put a new trans in. At the time a full diagnostic was run and no codes showed up and I finally had no engine light on. The car has been a a bit sluggish recently and would seem like it was going to stall sometimes. Yet again my engine light came on today so I called the dealer and asked what they thought especially since the diagnostic was clean. They told me that maybe the fuel filter needs changing and that if the fuel pump was going bad that they would have seen something when they checked the computer.

I am skeptical but always the optimist. Anyone got any ideas or thoughts?

hmm, without running the codes it is hard to know. Also, are you sure it is a 2000 STR?

Fuel filter is fairly easy to change on the 2000. Curious what you paid for the new trans from a dealer.

+1 it's not 2000 STR as only came out 2002.5MY.

Get your own OBD tool with live data such as elm327 about $15. Will read & clear codes but also show LTFTs (see below).

It cost $3100 installed - ouch but it seems to have been worth every penny so far!

Actually, considering the original poster is from the USA, it did not come out in 2002 but in fact 2003. The Euro/UK model cycle is 6 months to a year ahead of the North American cycle..

I'm sure it isn't as well. 2000 had but two drive train choices. 3.0 V6 and 4.0 V8.

I am also concerned that the OP had the transmission replaced. It was probably a failed spring in the valve body.

@hotel_gm54 - Get a scan tool like JagV8 suggested, if you don't already have one. If you need to buy one, you could have the local Auto Zone or Advance parts store run a generic code scan and post here what they get. It will help us all get you started.

Psst... Dave, my name is Jeff not Joe..LOL (see my signature)

Actually, while it sounded a bit **** to bring it up..it is really an issue that pops up here when trying to work with owners across markets...

See when a US user posts up questions about a 2002 vs. say a user that has a "2002" in France it very well may be two different answers....

Same with 2004... see, the body refresh was 2005 in the US yet 2004.5 in European markets..

Just like the first S Types in Europe were 1999 but 2000 in the US.

So, I really wasn't trying to nit-pick and I hope it wasn't taken that way..

Now, someone having a 2000 supercharged.... LOL

I received my ELM327 OBD tool only to realize that either it will not work with my iPhone or iPad or its bad. I am going to have a friend try it on their Android phone to see what happens.

But here's the thing guys - MY ENGINE LIGHT IS NOW OUT and has been since Friday without being reset or anything by me.

This is not the first time it has gone out without any action but it always comes back on eventually. What would cause this to happen?

Remember that the light is for things that are wrong right now. So what happened is whatever was wrong fell back within the allowed limits. But it usually won't last.

That's why you need to read the codes and that's also why the system stores any trouble codes. There is no guarantee that the problem will continue without ever changing.

Thank you I was not aware that there was a limit on displaying an error code. Almost as soon as I made the post about the engine light going out I ran the car through the local car wash and it came back on again so I am taking to a repair shop today to have them read the code and see whats up.

Does anyone know why iPhone & iPad can't cope with an elm327 - or is it even incorrect? The elm is incredibly common and uses a very standard interface (choice of USB or BT depends which is bought). There has to be an app, surely???

There is an app for iPhone called Engine Link that is supposed to work with the Elm 327 but it can't because the phone does not see the device so you can't pair with it. I spoke to several iPhone users in a forum like this who like me downloaded the app only to find that the phone won't pair.

The bluetooth software for iPhone/iPad is licensed and not openly available to developers like it is for Android.

This is a good option for the apple products: PLX Kiwi 2 Wifi | OBD2 OBDII iPhone

Very expensive. Sort of an Apple tax.
