Unhappy Brake problem - RESOLVED

Hi guys, not been on here for a while... i guess it's called happy motoring. However since owning my 2000 S-type, 3.0 V6 petrol, i have had a brake issue which is now giving me a headache.
When it is a warm or hot day the brake discs tend to get hot...nothing new there you say, but after driving around stopping and starting there is a rumbling scraping sound and feel under foot.
I have had new discs and pads fitted thinking that because they are old... time to change, the brake fluid was also changed last year .But alas today the problem is still there , but not so prevalent now with the new discs, but still there after driving around shopping i even went to Merry Hill through Brierley hill, for those of you that know this area it has a few hills which i thought was perfect testing grounds.
All was well until the last part of my journey home is when the problem reared its ugly head again.
Could it be an ABS problem, calipers, or something else... can any of you give me any ideas as to what the problem is or could be.
Thank you for taking the time to read this ...and have a great weekend.
Andy.

Based on your description, it may be a wheel bearing. Does the noise change whilst cornering?

When the brake pads and discs were replaced, I assume the caliper pins were cleaned and lubricated so the pads don't drag on the disc when the brake pedal is released.

Are you quite certain the noise is directly related to the brakes? What is the condition of the tyres? When did the car last go through MoT?

Well i am hoping all was done correctly by my local garage who have been there for many years and i have had no issue with them so far.
The types i am told have a 2/3 thousand miles left on them but i will be changing 2 before it next MOT which falls in October, the noise and rumble is felt on the brake pedal as and when it happens . This will be the 2 nd year i have owned it, had a new MOT and full service even having all 6 plugs changed and a new battery all was part of the deal i did with the seller who took my old Astra in px. It is a lovely car, in great condition has the odd spot of noticeable rust development on one wheel arch , the mechanic who replaced the discs yesterday checked the sills and had a good look around as asked by me . He is also aware of this issue and he said it could be the ABS...? Luckily i did not pay a lot for my Jag and so far what i have spent has all been ware & tear items which you would expect to change with a 20 year old car. But this issue is driving me to distraction....and drink...lol and i want it resolved and i am going down all the avenues i can think of by elimination.

Part-exchanging the Astra for the S-Type seems like a good deal!

The garage can check the ABS operation to eliminate the unit as the cause of the problem. Typically, the X200 has had an issue with the ABS module circuit board, which requires resoldering of two connections, but that's usually accompanied by ABS or Traction faults on the instrument cluster.

BTW, I'm very familiar with Birmingham as I was born there.

I have to say on one occasion after a Jag meet at Cosford in May, it was a hot day and on the way back the problem started again, and just as i turned into the grove home the information center lit up like Christmas... ABS, DSC, BRAKE FAULT...all showing. The next morning after everything had cooled off , the ABS light was still on,but after 5 minutes of driving it went out, now as i have said all this seems to happen when the temperature is a little high ,never on a cool day and never in the winter. Is this a clue as to what is going on...?

You might have the issue discussed in this repair PDF:

I had the same problem with my 2012 XJ 5.0 Sc, 56.000 km, very annoying.
I had the front discs resurfaced and the vibration was gone for about 25-30%.
While the mechanic was resurfacing, he already told me he thought this was not the problem because the correction was very little.
They also looked very new.

Two weeks later I went back for the rear discs and they needed a lot more correction. They were older also.
That was begin august, no problems anymore whatsoever. A happy driver now.

Smile Brake issue...

Back in 2017 i had e a brake issue that has now been resolved (early 2018) it all turned out to be the rear off side wheel sensor, i have since started using a Jaguar specialist quite local to me (Northfeild garage, Bristol road south, Birmingham) , as soon as i mentioned the problem it was done the next day and the brakes have been fine ever since. But one huge item i have had replaced was the gear box, it developed a gear box fault on the information center and gear changes became erratic and not even engaging at all, after a fluid and filter change it helped a bit but the issues returned. After a change at £700 all gears change well , but the problem now is that to engage drive i have to push the selector all the way in to 4th, and then back to drive, then the gear engages. Is this a cable problem ... or is it a dodgy selector...? For me the past 3 years has not been to bad, the cars interior is mint, and the body work is in good condition for the age, i have since repaired the paint bubble (spray paint costing the most at £23 a rattle can) and rear exhaust box deletion and custom made low range sport exhaust with 3 inch chrome turn down tips, looks and sounds wicked. So for me the car is worth saving, but the bills are adding up now. So all said and done it goes back in again for the selector correction and i will let you know what the issue was, then the MOT, and hopefully i should have a year with trouble free motoring. Happy Jagging everyone.

That's better.

I've added RESOLVED to your thread title because the brake issue was fixed. You should start a new thread for the selector problem.

Over the past 4 years, I have had several replacements of the front rotors. Three times, it was with Jag original rotors. 3rd time, the dealer had replaced front rotors within one year, free of charge but had still not resolved the issue. The vibrations came back.
A friend, who was riding in my car, suggested that it was probably the calipers and surely, he was right! It hadn't occurred to me or the dealer!
Local mechanic wanted $500/ea for after market calipers + labor. I think dealers charge $900/ea? + labor. (I didn't get an estimate from the dealer).
I bought the calipers very cheap (around $125?/ea) from rock auto. If you select their most expensive version of brakes/calipers, you get good quality. The ones I received were actually rebuilt original jaguar calipers! The rotors and pads from them were very cheap too and are working just fine.
All front brake vibration problems solved! Smile
